I don't know why the Skulduggery books haven't succeeded in crossing over to the U.S., given their great popularity in the United Kingdom. They aren't particularly British, (except for the dry humor and understated violence), and are perfectly accessible to an American reader. But, be that as it may, you'll just have to be content to be way ahead of your fellow readers on the cool scale, assuming you can find copies of these books. This volume three continues the development of the characters, advances the series' story arc, brings back some favorite secondary actors, and maintains the pace and deadpan humor of its predecessors. If you liked the first two volumes, (and you should probably try to read these in order), you should be happy with this installment.

This book is from my 10-year old...I think think this book is very fun, adventurous and funny. Who doesn't like a book about a skeleton who is a detective and a good guy? There are interesting character types that I haven't seem before in other books. I think the ending of the story leaves you wanting more. Read this book!

A great sequel for two great books. It was humorous and cheeky. A twist on a fairy tale and a detective story. When I picked out the first book on a school trip to the library, my teachers advised me not to read it, saying it was too scary. I denied their advice. It turned out to be the one of best story's I had ever read. You couldn't guess how happy when I got my kindle fire and found out they were on here! This book was a suspenseful page turner. I recommend it to anyone who enjoys books like Harry Potter.

The Skulduggery Pleasant series is for older kids, probably most exciting for the 10-12 age range. But I'm a mom, and I read this before passing it on to my son. (He was working on another book.) One thing I like about this series, which I like about the Harry Potter books, too, is that genuinely bad things happen to people. Though. since the world of magic and monsters isn't real, the young reader is removed from the violence being "real".But the battle between good and evil is desperate and the bad guys are really bad and there's plenty of people who sit in the middle unintentionally making trouble (Think Fudge in Harry Potter) or whose side is really up for grabs (Think Snape). There's also a lot of humor in the Skulduggery series.The Skulduggery books, at least through this 3rd book, do not have the touches of philosophy that you see in Harry Potter, though. If Derek Landy added a little more of the big questions to his stories, a little more of the morality tales, I think this series could turn into really exceptional books. Right now, they are, on balance, more simple fun.But sometimes the writing is downright excellent. Near the end of "The Faceless Ones", Landy describes a Faceless One as it enters our world. His description is amazing, I could see this creature in all it's awful beauty. More writing like that, and he'll have a classic. He's not there, yet, though.Recommended as fun reading.Happy Reader

I picked up the final book a year after reading the first two. I was not disappointed at all! this book is a quick read, but PACKED with a roller coaster of action, storyline and suspense. One of my favorite things about this author is that he includes dialogue that is completely relatable. No, I may not have magical powers or have a skeleton mentor, but I know the feeling of excitement, fear, embarrassment... Approachable and appropriate for the age group it targets. LOVED the series

A wonderfully told book of tragedy! Each personal account of the sinking of the Andrea Doria made me happy to be at home, safe in bed. The accident must have been the most terrifying event in the lives of all those aboard. I felt their aloneness and fear as each told of their own struggle to get off the ship. I loved the first account of the little girl and her family who sold their home, land and animals in order to travel to America to live. I felt so sad for all the immigrants who had money, clothing and personal treasures left behind on that sinking ship. I lost interest in the story when the trial began. The personal stories were wonderful! For history buffs and those who needed details of the crash there was more than enough facts in the final pages, but I left those chapters and picked up on the portions of how each one was able to find work and rejoin life after such a horrific event. For some, returning to the sea was necessary for their healing. Others lived with difficulty for the rest of their days as memories drifted back into their minds.

My sincere thanks to the author, Mrs. Simpson. She has given us the best book ever written about the Andrea Doria. I have read each and every (English) book about the tragedy. As a survivor, she presents us with a unique perspective. However, her excellent research gives us the perspective of people from all walks of life. Feel what it was like to be a Tourist Class passenger, First Class passenger, crew member, and rescuer. Mrs. Simpson takes us back to that fateful night. This work also answers the lingering question: Who was really responsible for the sinking of the Andrea Doria? The distinguished mariners who were interviewed for this work answer that question once and for all.

Great first hand account of the sinking. I've read other books on the sinking, but this had some stories and such that made me realize that there were aspects I had not previously appreciated. The author did treat the Captain of the Ile de France a little unfairly, saying that he had to decide whether to rescue those in peril or continue on his way, which of course was never an option. But overall I thought it a great book.

The story of an amazing rescue effort. When she went down, it was like seeing a noble animal die.

I enjoyed this book, had forgotten about this event happening, but after reading, some of the events I remembered(I was young at that time). I am not much on shipping/boats, but still interested. She really went into detail and did good research, I think.

The first hand accounts from the survivors were very interesting. The author has done a great amount of research too.

Didn’t know the story of the mishap

Alive on the Andrea Doria is a excellent book on the tragedy that sent the Andrea Doria to the depths of the Atlantic. The author does a good job of having different passengers from both ships share their experiences on that fateful night. With each story told, the reader can visualize the fear and urgency the passengers must have felt while trying to escape the listing ship. It was a shame that Captain Calamai of the Andrea Doria was the scapegoat due to the media and the non-support from his own country. The pictures of the sinking Doria along with a DVD of this tragedy that I have just brings chills to your spine. I would like to thank the author, Pierette D. Simpson for sharing her story as well and the stories of all of the courageous passengers who had to live through the nightmare of July 15, 1956.

Given all the reviews that said the Kindle edition had bugs/problems, I was a bit worried about my decision to purchase on Kindle. But I didn't want the paperback version.I am happy to report that:All the maps are easy to expand and view in as much detail as you like (at least 5 out of the 5 maps I have tested so far..)The indexes appear to be accurate & fully functioning.I tested a "bookmark" and it worked just fine & dandy.I tested this on an iPad mini, a fairly "old" version, and also on a fairly new iPhone. Bookmarks were "shared" quite well between the iPad and the iPhone. Both of these use the Kindle app.My conclusion is that the Kindle complaints were probably not the book itself, but something wrong with the Kindle platform and its compatibility with the device being used. If other books work well on Kindle for you, this one will probably also work just fine.My five star rating is based on the technology, I have not yet really dug into the book; but my opinion so far on the actual content lines up with the opinions of all the other reviewers here.

I'll tell you one thing - if you don't have a phone, or internet, or gps, or even common sense (joking) - you can travel through Namibia with just this book in your hands. I don't think I've ever had a more detailed and helpful guide to any country. And I travel a lot.

seems pretty good, my interest is wildlife and I would have liked more detailed content on that.HUGE mistake in one area - I bought the kindle version which should have been smart...guess what, you can't enlarge the included maps! At least, not any larger than the 5 or 6 font size choices you are given. So, if you are wanting to drill down into some detail, forget it!

Disclaimer: I am a big fan of Tim Keller's theology, my old church was a grandchild church plant of Redeemer (Redeemer planted our "mother" church in San Francisco = grandchild church?), and my cousin attends Redeemer in New York. But I am also a thirty-something Christian single female, who has dodged a lot of sympathetic sighing from well-intentioned people. Keller and his wife, Kathy, are well aware of the myriad of mixed messages Christian singles receive and they don't sidestep this often neglected group in their excellent book. As the daughter of a forty+ year Christ-centric marriage I can also see how the instruction they give is invaluable to married couples. They don't offer a five step if you do this, this, and this you will attract a godly mate, instead it's a Bible based exploration of why God gave us marriage and what it means for everyone- single or married, divorced, separated, widowed, etc.

The kids told my wife and me that this year they weren't coming home for Thanksgiving, so we decided we'd use the long weekend instead for our own little marriage retreat. We found an little farmhouse about an hour away offering a loft apartment for a three-day rental, and the two of us each brought a copy of Keller's book and spent those days working through the book, chapter by chapter. Both Tim and Kathy shaped the book, and Kathy directly wrote at least one chapter. I appreciated their honesty, biblical foundation, God-centeredness, and practical counsel.

Marriage is clearly a troubled institution in American culture, and that includes even among American Christians. The problem is that so often Christians have accepted the world's definitions of marriage. While many Christian books have been written on marriage, Tim Keller's "The Meaning of Marriage" is one of the best.What makes "The Meaning of Marriage" so excellent? At least four things. First, Keller gives a vision for marriage. His main reason for writing the book, in fact, was to give both Christians and non-Christians a vision for marriage. What is Keller's vision for marriage? Keller writes, concerning the meaning of marriage, that "It is for helping each other to become our future glory-selves, the new creations that God will eventually make us." More than this, Keller (in Chapter 6) relates marriage not only to "the dance of the Trinity" but also to Christ's love of the stranger (Chapter 5).The second reason "The Meaning of Marriage" is so excellent is that Keller bases his views on the Bible. Time and again, instead of turning to what the world teaches about marriage, Keller returns to the Bible, especially Ephesians 5. While Keller begins with the Bible, he does more than just quote Scripture: he unlocks its meaning and applies it to our lives. This is what makes his teaching on writing so profound and powerful. While he doesn't cover every possible topic, he does give a theological vision for marriage that will change your marriage for the better or better prepare you for marriage in the future.Third, in presenting a biblical view of marriage, Keller directly challenges the worldly views of marriage, including many that have infected the Church. Among the most popular of these myths is that we should be looking for our "soul mate," in the sense of finding someone we're presently in love with. This view minimizes the importance of the hard work that goes into marital love. Keller also rightly rebukes the idea that we should not go into marriage expecting to change the other person. To the contrary, marriage is precisely for the purpose of sanctifying one another, and Keller demonstrates some of the many reasons why marriage is such a powerful means of sanctification for Christian spouses. Keller takes on many other myths as well, for example, the idea that marriage is primarily for self-fulfillment, instead of mutual sanctification and becoming one with another.Fourth, "The Meaning of Marriage" is both readable and practical. Keller's ideas are rooted in theology but are written in a very readable prose. Most importantly, his book is eminently practical. While it's not a "How To" manual and doesn't give you every detail, he does amply illustrate and explain his major ideas on marriage. So practical is "The Meaning of Marriage" that it's applicable not only to Christian spouses but also non-Christian spouses and Christian singles. He has, for example, a chapter on a theology of singleness (Chapter 7).There are many profound insights in the book. There was little that was new to me as a priest and as a husband who has worked every day on his marriage for 18 years. But there were still many revelations and "Aha!" moments that reminded me of what it was all about and encouraged me to love my wife to an even greater degree. As I'm writing this, she's out of town on a business trip (which she never takes). I can't wait for her to return so that I can begin immediately putting into practice some of the things Keller has taught me.Here are some of his best insights:1. You never marry the right person. No 2 people are compatible. For this reason, marriage takes a lot of love and work. Also, marriage profoundly changes us!2. Two-thirds of unhappy marriages will become happy within five years if people stay married. Keller uses this to demonstrate the power of making and keeping a vow. Promising is the key to identity and is the very essence of marital love.3. Actions of love lead to feelings of love.4. Marriage is a friendship, and friendship must have constancy, transparency, and a common passion, which, for Christians, should especially be Christ.5. Each spouse should see the great thing that Jesus is doing in the life of their mate through the Word. And each spouse should then give himself of herself to be a vehicle for this work of God.6. Your spouse IS the "someone better" you're looking for! This is true if you see him or her in terms of the glory God intends for them, a work to which you are called.There's much, much, more, and each chapter holds its delights and wisdom for the reader. He takes the time to explain Biblically what marriage is and what it isn't. Yada yada yada, it was good and refreshing.

Let me start by telling you what this book is NOT so that you can appreciate the specialness of what it IS.If you want super detailed breakdowns of the intricate chemistry of psychedelics, this isn't the book to read.If you want lengthy trip reports of what happened when a person took mushrooms or peyote or LSD, look elsewhere.If you want detailed instructions for growing or cultivating your own psychedelics, you wont find it here.But if you want a gorgeous, engrossing, and simply joyful tour of the entire psychedelic universe?I cannot imagine a better book to pick up.This book delightfully weaves together the history of psychedelics, drawing you in with stunning visuals, fascinating historical anecdotes, and comparisons between how one mild-altering substance makes you feel versus another. if you are interested in wrapping your mind around this entire space (AKA becoming an "overnight expert" with interesting things to say and share with others) this book will not let you down.Ironically, this may be the book whose reading experience best approximates what it is like to trip on a psychedelic: a spacey, visual, and mind-bending tour of a world that is strange, foreign, subversive, and above all, FUN!You can tell the author had a blast researching / writing it, and I'm proud to say I had at least as much fun reading it.My research library on psychedelics would be incomplete without this volume.Pick it up. I’ve been reading about psychedelics since 2012, but I hadn’t read a book like Cody Johnson’s until I read his book. By consecutively reading from his book about the histories—from aboriginal to modern usage, or, for the synthetic compounds, like 2C-B and DiPT and MDMA, from synthesis through popularization and/or illegalization to today and the future—of 23 compounds, plants, or families of compounds, I gained a wider perspective on the world of psychedelics. The world seems bigger than it did before. I see more clearly now that there are many more psychedelic compounds and plants, and more varied usages of them, than I’d normally assumed.A book like Johnson’s can seem Wikipedia-like, but I mostly did not feel bored or like I was on the surface of things, as I would on Wikipedia. Johnson selects the most interesting things about each substance, citing pre-20th century sources, out-of-print books, obscure papers, and information on aboriginals, like the Koyrak Tribe: "At seasonal feasts and weddings, everyone consumes [fly agaric], often with berry juice."I learned that Leo Zeff, the pioneer in using LSD and MDMA in psychotherapy, also used ibogaine. Johnson quotes Zeff: "Of everything we tried, ibogaine achieved the most profound personal transformation of the patient—which after all is the goal and purpose of psychiatry. When it worked, the therapist was just a bystander.”Johnson writes from a sophisticated, open-minded perspective. He doesn’t get into his personal use of psychedelics, but I get the sense—from subtle clues in the writing—that he is experienced and deeply interested in natural and synthetic psychoactive substances, and in history and nature. I liked this sentence: "Tripping while depressed, anxious, or sleep deprived is a recipe for a difficult journey." On legality, Johnson points out that "the prohibitive approach actually maximizes their risks." He elaborates: "Imagine ordering a martini at a bar and not knowing whether you'll receive a martini or a triple shot of high-proof grain liquor—or a concoction with no alcohol, but a potent blend of caffeine, ketamine, methamphetamine, and stimulants you've never heard of."I recommend this book to have around. Even though I’d used ketamine before, and had read about it in scattered articles and papers for years, it felt good to be able to open Johnson’s book and read its ketamine chapter before using ketamine again, recently, to refresh what I know. The same could be done with the other compounds/substances in Magic Medicine—nitrious oxide, DXM, DOM, morning glory, peyote, Yopo, fish and sea sponges, MDA, 5-MeO DMT, and others.

To be up front, I'm not the type of person that would typically understand a lot of what this book is talking about - I have never been exposed to psychedelics in any form or fashion. The brilliant elegant cover and design pulled me to check it out, I read the first chapter, and immediately wanted more. Johnson does a fantastic job of tailoring his writing both to the very novice such as myself, as well as those most experienced with the psychedelics he highlights in the book.The book is easy to follow, well organized, and as elegant in writing as the typography and illustrations are throughout. The book served as a launch pad, prompting me to get online and research more about each one of the chapters. I may never try psychedelics, but I would strongly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in learning more about them, or who is already a well-seasoned fan of them and interested to learn a bit more about the history, and projected future of their medicinal properties. Thanks for sharing your knowledge, Mr. Johnson!

Fantastic read and reference presenting the world of psychedelics from an informed and intelligent but not-at-all-pretentious perspective. Johnson is an excellent writer and his style of writing is extremely engaging. Bonus: a great coffee table display - it has already sparked a lot of curious inquiries and flip-throughs from guests to my apartment!

Magic Medicine is a fantastically written book, that is well organized and information. The illustrations beautifully complement the fascinating content. As someone that does not have a lot of experience in the world of psychedelics, I found the book both entertaining and informational. Word choice and description enhance the reading experience. As someone with family members that have experienced a tremendous amount of physical paint while battling illnesses, I wish I had had this book and information sooner. If you have friends or family interested in this topic, Magic Medicine is a great read and source of information.

I had been convinced that American has never seen anything like our current political and constitutional crisis before now, with the obvious exception of the Civil War. Jon Meacham has shown me otherwise. This book is a well-written historical narrative of the on-going struggle within our country over the issue of civil rights. Meacham begins his book with Abraham Lincoln and takes a quote from his first First Inaugural Address:"I am loath to close. We are not enemies, but friends. We must not be enemies. Though passion may have strained it must not break our bonds of affection. The mystic chords of memory, stretching from every battlefield and patriot grave to every living heart and hearthstone all over this broad land, will yet swell the chorus of the Union, when again touched, as surely they will be, by the better angels of our nature." As the title of his book implies, each president has been challenged to search for the soul of America and seek the better angels. Meacham eloquently reminds us that there are times we have failed but inevitably the American people regroup, rethink, and, sometimes more slowly than hoped for, ultimately choose right over wrong. I have been enlightened by Meacham's history lesson and encouraged by his belief that hope will again bring this country together. Would that every American would take the time to read this book.

I am very familiar with Pulitzer-winning author Jon Meacham. I have read his bios on Bush Sr. and Andrew Jackson and rated them both 5 stars. I watch “Morning Joe” regularly; Meacham is a frequent contributor and I enjoy his viewpoints on whatever the topic of the day is. I must confess though to having been a tad skeptical about 275 page “The Soul of America” (Soul). I was concerned that it might be too early for such a book and that readers might be better served by something more comprehensive post-Trump. But the angel on my other shoulder reminded me that I needed something like Soul right now. As you may have guessed, I am not a Trump fan, far from it. But Soul is not a Trump-bashing book, though it will certainly resonate more with readers who share my political views than it will with the base.Meacham’s 19 page Introduction is an excellent set-up for what is to come. Meacham argues that he has chosen American soul rather than creed because soul goes to the next level – it is about acting on our beliefs. Meacham argues that it is “incumbent on us, from generation to generation, to create a sphere in which we can live, live freely, and pursue happiness to the best of our abilities. We cannot guarantee equal outcomes, but we must do all we can to ensure equal opportunity.” He believes that our fate is contingent on hope winning over fear. Meacham makes reference to dark moments in America’s history and he concludes the intro with “What follows is the story of how we have endured moments of madness and of injustice…..and how we can again.”Following the intro are seven lengthy chapters about some of America’s dark moments, with a heavy emphasis of what the President did (and didn’t do) in these moments of crisis. The chapters included: Jackson, Lincoln, Appomattox, the KKK, Reconstruction, Teddy Roosevelt, women’s suffrage, the Depression, Huey Long, the New Deal, Lindbergh, America First, McCarthyism, modern media, George Wallace, MLK, LBJ. The concluding chapter is titled “The First Duty of an American Citizen”. Soul offered many anecdotes and historical facts new to me. I have read many bios, particularly on some of the characters here, and I was amazed at how many stories I heard for the first time. I will share a few “aha” moments to give a feel for what you might expect……Frederick Douglass on Lincoln: “He knew the American people better then they knew themselves.” The author writes that Adam Smith’s (Wealth of Nations) view was that the “human capacity for sympathy and fellow feeling…was essential to the life of a republic”.Following the Civil War, Southerners shifted from military to political approaches to battle for white supremacy and their way of life.Teddy Roosevelt’s daughter said he always wanted to be ”the bride at every wedding and the corpse at every funeral”.Washington and Hamilton had very different views on immigration.In 1924, every one of the 48 states had a Klan presence. Klan members were governors of 11 states, held up to 75 House seats, 16 in the Senate. Meacham writes that hostility from eastern journalists directed at the Klan convinced a number of middle Americans that perhaps such an organization under press attack must have something to recommend it.(Silent Cal) Coolidge said at the time: “No matter by what various crafts we came here, we are all now in the same boat.A small group of Wall Streeters plotted to raise an army, march on D.C. and remove FDR from office. In 1936, a Gallup poll indicated that 95% believed America should stay out of any European war.Earl Warren, then AG of California supported internment camps.Edward R Murrow: “We must not confuse dissent with disloyalty”. Meacham writes about McCarthy that he needed the press, and the press needed McCarthy, because he was fantastic copy, a real-life serial. McCarthy was in the spotlight for three and a half years. His attorney Roy Cohn: “ ….any outstanding actor on the stage of public affairs……cannot remain indefinitely at the center of controversy. The public must eventually lose interest in him and his cause.” Meacham again: “He (McCarthy) oversold, and the customers-the public-tired of the pitch, and the pitchman.”A journalist speaking of attending a George C. Wallace rally: “You saw those people in that auditorium when he was speaking-you saw their eyes. He made those people feel something real for once in their lives.”Well, the Good News is that we have been here before and the country has survived. As the author points out, we have been a country that people struggle mightily to come to, not to leave. Our democratic system has been tested and stressed and has withstood attacks on our core beliefs and values. In the introduction the author states that he is writing Soul not because past American presidents have always risen to the occasion but because the incumbent American president “so rarely does”. I’ll close on a positive note, a quote that Meacham cites from Eleanor Roosevelt: “The course of history is directed by the choices we make and our choices grow out of the ideas, the beliefs, the values, the dreams of the people. It is not so much the powerful leaders that determine our destiny as the mush more powerful influence of the combined voice of the people themselves.”

Our current situation might seem dire, but Jon Meacham doesn’t want us to give up just yet. His message in The Soul of America is that we do certainly have reason to be alarmed, but maybe not too alarmed. The demons we face today we have faced before and, more often than not, we have faced them down.By the “soul” of America, he doesn’t want us to think in terms of a “speculative and gauzy” entity, but rather of “an immanent collection of convictions, dispositions, and sensitivities that shape character and inform conduct…” The soul he presents is not the essence of all things good and noble in America, but a conglomeration of contradictions. “…sometimes the soul’s darker forces win out over the nobler ones.” One on side there is MLK, while on the other there is the KKK. We can’t deny the existence of the latter, but it is the former that we have chosen to celebrate and honor.And so the battle has gone throughout a number of points in our history where we had to choose between the clenched fist of anger or the open arms of acceptance: the Civil War and Reconstruction, women’s suffrage, the rebirth of the KKK in the 1920s, the paranoia of the Red Scare, McCarthyism, and so on.Meacham covers these struggles of the American soul largely through the actions of the presidents in whose administrations they occurred, an effective approach given his extraordinary familiarity with the American presidency. It also had the effect for me of forcing me to adjust my evaluations of various presidents. I found myself admiring Eisenhower a little bit less over his tepid reaction to Joseph McCarthy, but liking Harry Truman a great deal more for some of the key decisions he made.As for our current president, well, Mr. Trump’s style is one of the primary motivations for this book: “I am writing now not because past American presidents have always risen to the occasion but because the incumbent American president so rarely does.”It’s undeniable, of course, that our “incumbent president” has his enthusiastic supporters, but it’s also undeniable that they are outnumbered by those who look upon the current White House with attitudes ranging from concern to downright horror. And for this less-than-enthusiastic majority, Meacham’s work offers a very encouraging and informative dose of good medicine.
