The professor, John L. Esposito, is a professor of religion at Georgetown University. I have actually read five of his books: “What Everyone Needs to Know About Islam” (2011 edition), “The Islamic Threat: Myth or Reality?,” “The Oxford Dictionary of Islam,” “The Oxford History of Islam,” and “Who Speaks For Islam?: What A Billion Muslims Really Think.” In this day and age where we have to confront issues like Muslim extremism, the debate over Muslims’ place in Western societies, and so on, understanding Islam and getting rid of prejudices and misconceptions about this great religion---which is the second-largest religion in the world after Christianity---this course is a great way to learn about this great religion. Lecture 3 talks about the life of the prophet Muhammad (570-632 CE). Lecture 4 discusses the role that the Quran plays in shaping how Muslims look at the world and how they live their lives. Lecture 5 discusses the role of both religion and politics in the lives of Muslims throughout history. Lecture 6 focuses simultaneously on Islamic law (Shariah) and on Sufism (a mystical branch of Islam). Lecture 7 talks about the various religious and political movements within Islam. Lecture 8 discusses the contemporary resurgence of Islam, while lecture 9 discusses the debates within Muslim communities regarding how Islam should be interpreted in the contemporary world. Lecture 10 is focused on the role of women in Islam and in Muslim societies and the debates over issues related to women’s rights in Muslim communities around the world. Most Muslims are from Asian countries.Origins: More on this later but the high level is that Islam has its roots in the Old Testament. Christian thoughts on the topic aren't far off, at least as I understand them. Both have the concepts of angels, Satan, Prophets, judgment, Heaven and Hell. Also, like Christianity, the writings of the prophet are interpreted by Ulamas or religious scholars rather than taken verbatim. Finally, Islam is a vast and complex religion with a variety of local practices and variations just like Christianity.Key differences between Islam and Christianity: In Islam, religion, government and personal lives are much more tied together. Christians seem to take their faith much less seriously as a general rule. Muslims observe Islamic law in every facet of their daily lives and while they recognize Jesus as one prophet among many they do not give him special divine status.Western view of Islam: During the professor's youth in the 60s Islam was a bit of an unknown and unstudied backwater, lumped in with Eastern religions despite its clear associations with Christianity. Now, the West views Islam through the lens of the Iranian Revolution and sees every Muslim as an extremist. From the other side, Muslims look at the Christianity and have some rightful historical misgivings dating from the Crusades to the current day in what is referred to as American Neo-Colonialism. Add to this the American tendency to side with Israel and the support of the British colonial occupation of Pakistan (which is almost entirely Muslim) and ... well, you get the picture.A few key terms:Islam - In Arabic, "Submission to God's will"Muslim - Also in Arabic, "One who submits"Salaam - peaceUmmah - term for the transnational Muslim nation.Ulama- a Muslim religious scholar

That's just my personal preference: I was looking for history and basic principals of Islam. The course put too much emphasis on modern political situation.

As much as I love most of the Teaching Company courses, this one was a disappointment. The presenter is engaging, but wastes far too much of the course's time reiterating and emphasizing that terrorism is the acts of a few fanatics rather than the product of mainstream Islam. I was hoping for something informative regarding the various sects and schools of jurisprudence within Islam. Not here, other than a few mentions of the schism between Sunni and Shia. No mention of Alawites or Druze. No explanations of the doctrinal differences or backgrounds between twelvers, Ismailis, or Zaidis, for example. The only revelatory portions of these lectures for me were his discussions of varying customs/laws regarding the treatment of women in different Islamic countries. Bottom line - this course is more an apologia for tolerance of Islam rather than an informative academic course.

About the Author

September Williams is an American physician-writer, bioethicist and filmmaker. All of her work seeks a better understanding of and between ourselves. She focuses on promoting resilience for people who are ill, aging, dying, or stressed by environmental and humanitarian violation. Yet, her writing is fired by the humor which allows people and characters to make it through hard times. Her first novel, and the first in a series of three books, is Chasing Mercury, a romance-suspense-memoir about families committed to human and environmental rights. September's nonfiction writing covers health disparities, bioethics and film. She is a member of the National Writers Union (AFLCIO/UAW 1981), an affiliate of the International Federation of Journalists, and the American Society for Bioethics and Humanities. Though raised in Los Angeles and the San Francisco Bay Area, September is a graduate of the University of Winnipeg Collegiate Division and has a Bachelor of Science in Zoology from the University of Manitoba, Canada. She attended Creighton University School of Medicine, and completed internal medicine residency at Cook County Hospital, Chicago. A tribute to her vanguard nature, September holds three fellowships which did not exist the day she started medical school. She was an ASPEN (American Society of Enteral and Parental Nutrition) Clinical Fellow in surgical hyperalimentation at Chicago Medical School; a Lowell T. Coggleshall Fellow at the University of Chicago MacLean Center for Clinical Medical Ethics; and an American College of Geriatric Medicine / HRSA Clinical Geriatrics Fellow at the University of California, San Francisco. With him, she explored how universal stories influence peoples' expectations of medicine and science, autonomy and justice-particularly when adapted to screen. Dr. Williams subsequently learnt her film craft in the screenwriting and directing MFA program at Columbia College, Chicago and at Boston University, while also working in an inner city trauma center. She was a National Endowment for the Humanities Institute Fellow in Black Film, at the Zora Neal Hurston Center for the Documentary. Dr. Williams is a co-editor, author, and reviewer of books, articles and films related to medical and bioethical issues. Over twenty-five years, Dr. Williams has provided more than a thousand lectures and consultations in clinical and organizational bioethics. Beyond her hospital based service and teaching, some of this work has been for the Centers for Disease Control, the National Center for Bioethics at Tuskegee University, Harvard AIDS Institute, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the Center for Practical Bioethics, the American Academy of Pain Management, and the McGann Women & Health Lecture Series at Stanford University. Dr. Williams retired early from the San Francisco City and County's Laguna Honda Hospital-God's Hotel. I had purchased the Energy Oracle Cards twice. First time, because the reviews were so great and when I got it, I did not enjoy the messages (they were honest and stuff I did not want to hear) so I sold it. Second time, whatever it had given me advice on was so correct and did manifest in the way it said it would, I couldn't ignore the fact this was a necessary oracle deck for me.Its an interesting deck and the best way to describe it would be associating it as an oracle deck that reads like a tarot deck. There, of course, are some exceptions as it has chakra/archangel cards, a mixture of major and minor arcana themed cards (not all of the cards, but enough of them), and a spattering of court cards (however you do not see the wands court suite represented).The artwork reminds you of Colette Baron Reid's The Enchanted Map Oracle. Actually I wouldn't be surprised if its the same artist. It is computer graphics, almost a 2D hologram effect (not 3D). There is a soft touch to the choice of colors, pastels and brilliant earth tone colors (like good, tan, green, etc.). A lot of gold, tan, and soft blues throughout this deck with an occasional splash of red here and there. The artwork is pretty. I reserve gorgeous/beautiful in describing some of the artwork in other oracle decks (ie Toni Carmine Salerno's Magdalene Oracle, etc.). There is nothing in this deck, in terms of art, that would be offensive unless you find Fabio looking "Man Holding A Coin" offensive. This deck artwork also reminds me of The Starseed Tarot, but moreso better described by The Enchanted Map Oracle. They pop up and I think ??? The more I use the deck whenever I see such cards I indicate it as blockages that need to be worked on. Or maybe one can remove the chakra/archangel cards from the deck and use them alone for chakra readings/balancing. I guess there's a mysticism to the cards as I think angels are assigned to different body parts in some jewish beliefs, so maybe that is the reason between the association of the archangels with the chakras. I'm still trying to learn how to smoothly incorporate the interpretation of those cards into my readings.I find this deck to be inspired by The Psychic Oracle or the Oracle Tarot in its foundation. However, these named decks did not celebrate the use of court cards, while the Energy Oracle Cards does. If you enjoy using either The Psychic Oracle or the Oracle Tarot, I think Energy Oracle Cards would be a great addition. If you are a tarot enthusiast who is trying to bridge a gap between the usage of oracle cards, I think you will be really impressed with this deck. I love the fact its so accurate.

I absolutely love this deck. I've had it about a week and it's one of the best decks I have. Here are a few things I really like:1. The artwork is pretty good, not the best I've seen but good. The pictures are involved and have lot of meaning in them which you will see from the descriptions in the book. Each element means something. It is not JUST a picture.2. Each card has a right side up and reverse meaning. I love this and don't have this with any of my other oracle decks. It gives a lot of insight into the meaning of the car.3. The book is detailed and each card has a lot of information.I just love these and each reading has been completely spot on. A must get for anyone interested in reading oracle cards.

There's also a well thought out 176-page guidebook that comes with it - including invocations, sample spreads, and card meanings.And my favorite is how the images are so vibrant, vivid, well illustrated with a nice glossy finish to them. The size of the cards is the normal size you would get for an oracle card. I trimmed my cards for better shuffling. That really depends on you. Inexpensive and an overall a very good buy. You won't regret buying this deck.It has been one of my Go-To oracle decks for daily draw and deeper personal readings.It has never failed me and very, very accurate. One example was about a recent job interview. The card Door To Value and Cornucopia were in the 3-card reading. Door To Value is like the ultimate yes to your financial, job, work situation - it is the solution to your problem and the YES to it. Cornucopia is about abundance and new beginnings. A sort of nudge from the Universe telling you that, "You've been blessed by me. Now here's my gift to you."I gifted one to a friend and got one for myself. That's how good this oracle deck is.

I absolutely love these cards ! the energy pull from them for me , is instant and full on powerful . I have certain go to cards I use when I give readings , but these quickly became part of that line up . The cards are good quality , sturdy , laminated , the pictures are beautiful , they are numbered at the top which rocks for me ! as I pull numbers for my clients as well . They come in a thick box and the book is well written and explained perfectly , all around love these cards !

Great book, I just don't care for the part on killing Chickens. I could never kill anything and certainly couldn't slaughter anything. I'm no vegetarian, but it's just a personal thing where that is concerned. I would however be one before I'd kill an animal myself or even watch it. Outside of that chapter the rest of the book is fabulous & has great ideas. It did also inform me as to what the chicken industry is doing in our country and it did influence how I will purchase eggs now and in the future. I would however like to comment that the section on raising chickens for eggs was much appreciated & could be useful to anyone. It includes what to feed them, how to house them, when to get the eggs from the nests, what to do to prevent vitamin difficencies etc.. The gardening part of the book is well thought out and is an easy read. Much information is included, including how to collect your own seed so you do not need to always purchase seeds every year which is awesome :o The book also tells you how to fertilize etc. I combined this book with techniques from Container Gardening and 4 Season Harvest & have had much success in a patio garden that is 14X8 and have never grown anything in my life. I've been eating fresh produce for the entire summer now, and have a fall garden currently growning so it has been great and will continue to be wonderful through the winter. I do not plan to always live in a condo so that is one reason why I went ahead and incorporated techniques from this book into my current gardening plan. It's an easy read and can be used in manhy ways other than out in the country :o)

I have read maybe fifty books on farming techniques, and had really high expectations for this one. Sadly, it is one of three books I have asked a refund on since I started buying books on Amazon back around 2001. I was dismayed, disgusted and disappointed by the complete lack of respect this writer showed his readers. Instead of illustrating his ideas, and giving us details, each chapter followed the same formula: " A: here is an idea I stole from someone else. B: this is who I stole it from. C: brief summary of stolen idea. D: want to know more? Read a book from the original author of the idea I stole!" I'm not making this up! Please save yourself the money and buy "Urban Homestead " by Kelly Coyne or "Gaia's Garden" by Toby Hemenway or better yet, subscribe to Mother Earth News instead. These are only 3 of the myriad of truly helpful publications you would be better off buying. BTW, Mother Earth News has a wonderful website wth free info. So does Urban Homestead. Forewarned is forearmed. Yards are for food, not chemicals. :-)

This was quite a disappointment. We have a couple of acres that we're planning on farming when we retire and we figured that if you can do it on a quarter acre then it should be easy to grow most of what we need on our property so we bought this in print and kindle. We should have saved our money on both.The book completely fails to deliver on the promise, in fact, there's almost no mention of how to grow intensively and virtually no pictures of the author or anyone else actually doing it. There are a few stock photos of vegetables and then maybe 20 or 30 copies of the same photo of long grass in the book. What's up with that? I eat grass - once converted to beef - but all those grass pictures could have been replaced with pictures of his own 1/4 acre intensive garden - assuming he actually has one. It's not clear at all from the book.90% of the content of the book is standard articles easily available in any gardening book, magazine, website, or a dozen other places on how to create compost, how to plant, how to harvest, etc... nothing at all that is unique or special to an intensive garden. Look at urbanhomestead dot org for an example of great pictures of intensive gardening. You'll find nothing at all like that in this book.

While I've maintained small gardens and potted plants for years, for a good 5 years I've casually kept a 1,000 square foot garden. I've mostly winged it, sometimes with surprisingly good results, other times with dismal harvests. But, in any event, never consistent year over year results.I picked up this book to take my gardening to the next level and broaden my horizons a bit. And, in short, I'm very satisfied with the insights and guidance I've gleaned from this book. I'd go so far as to say that while you don't need a background in gardening to benefit from this book, I think this book is a perfect fit for people in my situation. Here's pros and cons from my perspective.Pros:- The content of each chapter is very well organized, with concepts building onto one another very neatly.- And for that matter, the broader subject matters of the chapters takes one through the process of planning, preparing, selecting, timing, managing, etc. most everything one would need to successfully grow a garden.- This book strikes a good balance between giving you the key information you need for any one aspect of self sufficient gardening, but not inundating you with to much detail. In other words, this book threads the needle on delivering a lot of helpful information, while still feeling like an easy read.- I've seen other reviews for this book that complain that the author pretty much rips off others ideas and re-packages them for profit. I read quite a bit, and have over the years seen serious examples of what these other reviewers are talking about. But, in the case of this book, while the author informs on alternative (and even competing models) for gardening, the author always informs the user on what in his experience has or has NOT worked from various models, how he has modified some of those ideas to work in his growing climate, and where he completely parts ways from others' techniques and espouses his own approach (including very clear instruction on how to use his modified or totally unique processes).- Finally, where possible, the author provides the equivalent of 'modified workouts' for those less fit (my words, not his) in their gardening abilities. In other words, the author provides sufficient detail on what might be the most efficient and beneficial approach to say irrigation or composting, but then across those and other subjects covered in the book, he provides a less expensive/quicker/initially easier alternative for those lacking the time, resources, space, skills, etc. to fully implement the best possible approach for one aspect or another of gardening. For example, as I'll be looking to expand my garden this next spring, I fully intend to utilize some of the quicker soil prep techniques offered up in this book for use in a pinch while I build up my long-term composting and soil amendment routines.Cons:- While some of the chapters really cover all the bases for the targeted subject matter (i.e. plant spacing, soil prep, etc.). Others give you just enough to run with, but definitely leave you wanting more. A good example of this would be Chapter 7 ("Time and Yield"). While the author definitely gives a good broad overview of timing techniques (i.e. succession planting, timed planting, interplanting etc.), for such an important subject matter, I was surprised (in a disappointed kind of way) by just how short this chapter was. I live in Michigan, with a relatively short growing season. I see this topic as critical for people in shorter growing zones like me, and apart from a quick overview of each of the techniques used to maximize productivity, and a handful of real-world examples of plant groups that work well for things like succession planting (taking into consideration their hardiness in colder climates), this chapter really leaves readers wanting.- While this book is beautifully illustrated, there's no doubting that the abundance of pretty pictures of garden produce, chickens, tools, etc. just serves as fill to make the book feel a bit more substantial in size than it need be. I don't want to over play this point, as A LOT of the illustrations (pictures/graphics/tables) are pertinent to the content of the book (and in any event, some amount of artwork is always nice to have), I think you could still produce this book, with many beautiful illustrations, and reduce it from its current 227 pages (including the index and notes pages) down to maybe 175 pages.

About the Author

Roseann Sdoia is a public speaker and advocate for challenged athletes. She was born in Winchester, Massachusetts, a suburb north of Boston. After graduating from the University of Massachusetts/Lowell, she moved to Los Angeles where she began her career in real estate management. After two years working in LA and then Florida, she realized that all of her vacations were spent traveling home to New England, so she returned to Boston. Dedicated to both her professional and personal lives, Roseann's circle of friends and family is legendary - even her trauma surgeon at Massachusetts General Hospital gave up on his "one guest for only fifteen minutes per hour" rule when he saw her line of visitors stretched down the hospital corridor. She is committed to one day running the entire 26.2 mile Boston Marathon. In November of 2014, she completed her first 5K race since the bombing so she is on her way. Perfect Strangers is her first book.

This is a wonderful first-person account of what happened to Roseann Sdoia at the Boston Marathon bombing and her amazing recovery. In spite of the horrible things that happened, she truly came out a winner, gaining a whole new life - new friends, love, a new career.There is no sugar coating in her retelling of the story! She even discusses her decision of whether or not to go to the trial of the brother captured after the bombing. I was especially touched by her family's reaction to what happened and how she bonded with the people she met at the moments after the bombing - people who saved her life..The more personal side of the story (she bemoans that she cannot wear high heels any longer, struggles with how to buy clothes to fit over her prosthesis, jokes about not getting a one-leg discount when she gets a pedicure) lets you see her spirit and determination.In the end of the book it was noted that Roseann is now doing speaking about amputation and amputees, and I would love to hear her speak in person..I was impressed by how well-written the book is (some memoirs are not!) and believe that she could have a career in writing if she wanted.I highly recommend this book!

Like most the country, I was riveted by the events of the Boston Marathon Bombing and the aftermath. This well written, first hand account of the events is unique. This is not about the bombers or the criminal case, but personal one...specifically a true survivor whose life was changed forever. And, it's about three people who helped save her and became her family through tragedy. This book tells the before, the heart-wrenching during, and the aftermath for Roseann Sdoia. It was so personal and real. A must read!

I felt this book showed us the great strength that everyone had or worked really hard to achieve . It is good to be able to follow Roseann who was there to watch her girlfriend run up to and, through her trauma and then being able to say she met the love of her life. There are stories about how wonderful people came together to save her life as well as their own stories. Living in MASS. this really hit home and brought some of the terror back. I enjoyed this book.

I thought the book was wonderful. Roseann covered, with great sensitivity and honesty, her feelings as well as the feelings of the other individuals she writes about. I couldn't put the book down. My children grew up in Dracut, MA where Roseann grew up. My two oldest children knew Roseann and my youngest knew of her. I believe one of my son's friends used to date Roseann. She certainly grew up to be a very lovely, "strong," and determined woman and my children and I wish her and her husband, Mike, much love and happiness. My 8 year old granddaughter, Samantha, saw Roseann and Shana on TV one evening and she told my daughter that she knew Shana. She said that she met her at her babysitter's house Her babysitter's name is Gloria.. What a small world it is!

This is my niece! I have been waiting for months for this book to come out. Please read it, it is truly a heartfelt book of their journey!

Honest and inspiring. I was lucky to hear Roseann speak at a local library and meet her. She is one strong woman and I wish her all the best in life.The writer did a beautiful job telling her story. It really is the story of the strangers who became her friends.

Before I was even out of the prologue I had already cried a little, smiled a lot and was completely hooked. I met Roseann once and she is one amazing lady. This is an absolute must read.
