Review
"A brilliant and engaging overview of colonial Latin American literature, replete with new insights and visions. Its brevity, clarity, and wit should make it the starting point for any study of the period and of the polemics of possession." -Frederick A. de Armas, Andrew W. Mellon Distinguished Service Professor, University of Chicago "Rolena Adorno has written the book that should have been written decades ago. Her unequaled scholarship, her power of synthesis, and her precise prose make this an introduction to colonial Latin American literature that will become indispensable to all students in the field." -Verónica CortÃnez, professor of colonial studies, University of California, Los Angeles; author, Memoria original de Bernal DÃaz del Castillo

I generally enjoy Oxford's Very Short Introduction series for various literatures, and have finished the volumes on French, English, Spanish, Italian literatures besides this one on Colonial Latin American literature. Compared with other volumes, this one is less thematic, and organized more neatly according to authors and works. It also defines literature more broadly than the other series, including many works that I would classify as history works such as those by Oviedo, Las Casas, Sahagun, Jose de Acosta, etc. (which I am interested in and enjoy reading about). The reason I didn't give this a 5-star is because of two major gaps I see in the coverage:1) It includes works written in Spanish, some Latin and occasional French work, but it has no mention of any Portuguese-language works.2) In terms of real "literature" works discussed, it jumped from the Latin American Baroque towards the period of late 18th / early 19th century around the cusp of independence movements - thus something like a 100-year gap exists in the account.Given it is a short pocket-book, I am ok with omissions as long as the general gist as to why they are dropped from the account are mentioned. Unfortunately, this book just leave these glaring gaps without any acknowledgement.
I use it as a reference book.
This little book is so well written, and so helpful! I will look for other titles in this series!Charmed.
It covers the most important topics in Colonial, Latin American Literature. The paragraph division seems to be a bit arbitrary or done in a rush at certain points. Each chapter might have been organized in a better way.
A thoughtful, fast-paced and surprising introduction to the major figures and issues of Colonial Latin American literature.
Wonderful, concise, yet comparative overview of the subject. I used it in a university undergraduate course and will order it again.

About the Author
Since 2010 Mark has been writing what has been described as one of the most credible Everest opinion blogs out there. He writes about trekking and mountaineering from the often silent perspective of the commercial client. For over a decade he has been exploring the world’s greater mountain ranges and keeping a diary of his travels. As a writer he strives to do for mountain history what Bill Bryson did for long-distance hiking. Several of his expedition diaries are available as quick reads from the major online bookstores. His first full-length book, Seven Steps from Snowdon to Everest, about his ten-year journey from hill walker to Everest climber, was published in November 2015. His favourite mountaineering book is The Ascent of Rum Doodle by W.E. Bowman.

Just read this one yesterday, and, as was the case with all of the pieces of his that I've read so far, Mark Horrell painted a rather vivid picture of what trekking through that remote part of the world still is, warts and all. I really enjoy reading his descriptions of the people he encounters, as well as the places, because he tends to not try to gloss over the less-than-pretty aspects of these kinds of trips. Somehow he manages to make all the misery that seems to be inextricably entwined with these treks funny (in an "Angela's Ashes" sort of way) and makes you feel as though you're slogging through the muck right along next to him.
Having done the Gokyo - Cho La last year I really enjoyed Marks comments on his trek and climbs. Planning to return in 2013 to do the Three Passes of Khumbu, so his comments on Renjo La were very helpful. However as an "old" trekker, now 64, I found his condescending comments on the elderly Japanese trekkers distasteful along with his thoughts near Namche Bazar about them tottering along on their walking poles and wondering why they did not do it when they were younger. Perhaps they were too busy making an income to bring up your generation. Mark, I think you should be commending them for attempting their trips instead of relegating them to homes for the aged. But apart from this, it was a great read and highly recommended for anyone thinking of going to the area.
For $1 on Kindle can't go wrong. Good little book on a trek from Lukla to Mera and Island Peaks and then to Goyko and back to Lukla. Well worth the dollar spent.
Gives insights into what it is like to trek the Himalayas and also into the Nepal culture.
The first "book" I read by Mark Horrell confused me a little, more or less dumping the reader into one of Mark's journeys into the high mountains without any real background but after reading two or more of these accounts you will get his style and just plain enjoy his descriptions of some distant destination, often lesser known that most mountaineering adventure spots. I would love to be have been able to live the life he has!
I have come to quite enjoy each of Mark Horrell's travel diaries, not only because of their details of what it's like to participate in a commercial trek or climb, but because of the self-effacing and witty style in which they're written. While I don't always get the British sense of humour, it's evident that some of the trek participants don't either! Entertaining!
Have other M Horrell's books. All are entertaining, earthy language is not off-putting to me...the book has detailed descriptions that helps me understand climbing better. Great photos.
This is the second of Horrell's books that I have read and it was much better that the first, Snowman trek. This one kept me looking forward to reading further. I enjoyed his discriptions of the climbing and of the trek to get to where he eventually summitted the mountain. I do recommend this book.

Still reading the book but one thing I am finding VERY frustrating is none of the QR codes (or the Bitly addresses below them) are functional. They all go to error pages. I'm hoping the publisher sees this review and gets them fixed so readers can watch the videos. I will check them again and update my review when I'm done reading the book.
This is a great introductory course for people who want to go beyond just a cursory understanding of wine. The quizzes help structure the learning well, and they go fairly far in depth. Overall, I thought the book was the perfect way to provide structure that other excellent books such as The Wine Bible does not. The layout is friendly, and the side bars with wine labels and blurbs with info are interesting. Unfortunately a few obvious errors make it feel a bit cobbled together, and they aren't in areas of the book I would have believed to just be about a recent update. For example, in the section on Australia, the main white grape varieties have Merlot listed but the section on Aussie reds has Semillon. I understand it's upside down world there, but I'm pretty sure this is incorrect. In another it says "Two of the best DOCG Tuscan wines come from... Barbaresco and Barolo." (This is under the correct Piedmont section) A few other examples are found in the book.None of these errors are disqualifying by any means. If you have any common sense at all you won't be more than momentarily confused. So I still highly recommend the book.
I just completed my L1 Sommelier certification and this book is really helpful at laying down the basics for anyone who wants to learn more about wine. I love Kevin's story (see Chapter 1) and the margins are packed with great facts, its simply brimming with information but doesn't feel overbearing at any point. I will need more in-depth books to get to the next level but, this is an excellent starting point to lay a broad foundation of knowledge before diving into very specialized topics. I have plotted out a series of personal tastings over the next 8 weeks using Kevin's book as a framework. Very helpful, indeed!
I was recommended this book for the Sommelier exam which I am aiming to take in a few months. The content I feel is pretty okay. Dated on some area's that differ from what some of my Somm's mentors told me during practice quizzes. Over all a good book with a lot of information to study from. What was extremely frustrating is the editing for the digital version, is much of the text is cut off. I have both a hard copy version, and a digital. Often key words are missing. Very poor editing for this book for being compatible with digital platforms. I don't know how they can expect payment on something that at times isn't readable.
Being a sommelier with numerous wine books in my collection, I was hesitant to add another entry level book to my repertoire. After reading this the past few days, I'm glad I did. Even for seasoned wine professionals such as myself, there are a plethora of interesting facts, charts and unique perspectives which Kevin describes in this book. Furthermore, it is written in a layman style which makes it suitable for all levels. Highly recommended.
Amazing. Going back to school in my old age, and therefore, working as a server. This book is truly well-organized and has everything you could need. Knowing the basics of regions and types of grapes makes everything so much easier. Made every other wine book I bought obsolete. Only thing is the links to the expanded coverage no longer work, but it doesn't matter. If you go to YouTube, Zraly has more than a few fun to watch videos with Oz Clarke that will be well worth your time.I find myself reading this just for fun.
The book was well made and felt solid in my hands. The contents were also complete and helpful. The book pretty much followed what was taught in a university setting. I appreciate the attention paid to each wine producing region. There is no information on China, a important developing wine region with volume surpassing Germany and Chile, but it is same for most other wine books. The contents feel a bit jumbled because the author list by wine types rather than region (thus you would visit many places twice) but that is more of a personal thing. My only complain is the amount of brand suggestions. While I don't believe that there is collusion between the authors and the winemakers, brand suggestions are just not that helpful. Such suggestions always go out of date and thus the value offer by the book diminish as time goes on. I would've liked more wine descriptions rather than long list of brands.
This is a very nice book with one very major flaw - all of the internet links do not work because the publisher allowed their bit.ly links to lapse. A big oversight.Still, if you want to learn wines this is a great place to start. I would buy it again even without the links but I rated them only 4 stars because of the missing material online.
