[This is my first Amazon review but I hope that it won’t be immediately discounted for that reason. Even the most respected reviewers had to write their first!]First off, I am by no means a Middle Eastern scholar (hence my reading this book), and so I can’t really comment on the historical accuracy of most of the events described. But there are elements other than historical accuracy that I can more readily comment on, and so here they are.The organization of the book can make it difficult to keep track of where you are in time and space at any particular moment. I found myself having to frequently reread sentences and paragraphs, particularly at the beginning of new sections, in order to orient myself. The chapters are generally chronologically ordered, but the information within is not typically presented in a strictly chronological way. For example, the chapter titled “The Years of Turbulence” (which covers from about 1970-1991) is broken down into sections titled “The Rise of the Oil States,” “Egyptian Initiatives,” “Israel/Palestine and the Lebanese Victim,” “Islamic Reassertion, Revolution and War,” and “Iraq’s World Challenge.” In the “Egyptian Initiatives” section, you may read about Egypt’s role in Israel, Palestine, and Lebanon before moving on to other topics related to Egypt in that time period. It can therefore be a bit disorienting when you’ve moved on to read the Israel, Palestine, and Lebanon section and have to revisit Egypt’s role within that new context. This breakdown into sections focusing on one region or concept at a time is common throughout the book.That said, I imagine it’s incredibly difficult to structure a book of this nature. In attempting to cover a topic that is so historically, geographically, culturally, politically, and religiously broad and with so many overlapping and intersecting people and events, any attempt at logical organization will have its drawbacks. Overall, the organizational idiosyncrasies were not so difficult to overcome as to make me put the book down. But if you’re looking for a quick and easily digested overview, this may not be your best option.What did threaten my attempt to finish reading was the abundance of basic typos, especially in the later chapters. These typos range from missing words to repetitive words/phrases (for example, on pg. 426, “Though they grabbed most of the most headlines…”) to more obvious mistakes like the misspelling of Afghanistan as “Arghanistan” (pg. 428). I know many people can overlook these small errors, but I had a history professor who always said that spelling and grammar mistakes are a sign of poor editing, and poor editing almost always means other mistakes and inaccuracies have been overlooked as well. I did find at least one glaring factual inaccuracy: on the bottom of pg. 152, it says that August 2, 1914 was 5 days after Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated, but Ferdinand was assassinated on June 28, not July 28. Although it ultimately has no bearing on the specific topic being discussed, it did put me on my guard and make me wonder about other potentially erroneous statements in areas I’m not as familiar with and therefore wouldn’t know were errors.Perhaps more notable, my recognition of the increasing number of typos coincided with a feeling that the previously balanced viewpoint was shifting to one side, specifically that the tone was becoming noticeably harsher toward Israel’s role in events. I started to notice the trend in the chapters dealing with the more recent events, i.e. post-Gulf War. I’m neither pro- nor anti-Israel, but the tonal shift was noticeable enough to make me curious. I wondered if the shift could be explained by the fact that the book has been revised and updated by a second author, so I flipped back to the title page and the introduction page.The book was originally published in 1991, with a second publication in 1992. The next publication was not until 2003. The original author, Peter Mansfield, passed away in 1996, so it seems logical to assume that Nicolas Pelham, credited with updating and revising, was responsible for the bulk of the post-1992 information that’s presented (although Mansfield could conceivably have contributed to some of the 1992-1996 updates). Whether it was conscious or not, Pelham displays a subtle but clear favoring of the Palestinian side of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and at times it was difficult for me to fully trust his depiction of events, or at least to trust that he was conveying the full story. I don’t think it should completely turn you away from the book, since dealing with an author’s potential biases are an inevitable part of reading any non-fiction work, but I wouldn’t rely on this particular breakdown of the events as the sole basis of your knowledge on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

This book was very well researched-like exhaustive. I learned how the middle east has been an ever changing, over run, and often violent in regime change for hundreds of years. Attempts at creating islands of change in a sea of political turmoil, and conflict that shape shifts back and forth between tribes. Interplay by outside government that disperse their own doctrine, and to some degree commerce and trade for a price-and for creating puppet rulers that are soon swallowed up. Spinning back and forth in a time capsule from the middle ages, to the present time, and back again.

In this exceptional book, Peter has very well encapsulated the very long Middle East history in an abbreviated, yet comprehensive way. While highlighting the major milestones in his pleasant writing style, he never forgets to mention important and interesting quotes by prominent politicians of their times, and may be of all times. Further, as an Egyptian Middle Eastern, I find the reciting of the history quite unbiased and neutral. This book has been my quick reference for history events and will certainly continue to be.

Concise, yet comprehensive history of the ME.

I found this book at a small shop in Gays Mills this year when I was there on my annual apple buying trip. I am an avid reader but I will tell you straight out that this is the most amazing book I have ever read. The sad thing is that I had never heard of it or the author but the cover caught my fancy so I thought I would give it a try. I'm not sure how the author made me nostalgic and sad for things I personally have never experienced but oh my gosh, what a read. I was laughing one minute and crying the next. I was going to loan it to my mom and mom-in-law but decided they will be getting their own copies for Christmas. Don't miss this gem of a book. I guarantee you will finish it and wish it went on for many more pages.

I personally knew Ben Logan, growing up about 6 miles from the farm he described in this book. I have hunted deer and turkeys and foraged for mushrooms on the land described within and talked to Ben many times when I asked his permission to hunt. This is a wonderful book that describes growing up in the midwest between the great wars, facing the hard times of the depression, and adapting to the times. Many good lessons to be learned by all who read it. A wide open window to another era.

The ancestors on one side of my family had a start in the USA very similar to the family in this book (a beginning separated by only about 100 miles). The book seemed very faithful to the reality described to me by some in my family and caused me to recall a few things I'd been told as a child.We recently visited Seldom Seen Farm and were pleased to find the author has arranged to have the site dedicated to a nature conservancy which should protect and keep it as agricultural land in perpetuity. Mr. Logan no longer lives at the farm but occasionally visits. This Fall a monument to him is being dedicated at the site. See this website for details: [...]For others without a personal connection the place and the times, I highly recommend the book as an easy to read look into life on nearly self sufficient farms in the USA heartland of the early 1900's. The author's ability to share the lifestyle and the feelings of the people make this a worthwhile read.

A friend asked if I had read this, and just said, "I think you'll like it." I thought, judging by the original cover, that it looked overly nostalgic and sentimental - I was very wrong. ( I know, there's a saying about that...) This truly is one of the most beautifully written personal histories I've ever read. It reminds me of the writings of Aldo Leopold, John Muir, and Annie Dillard; and it's as much about the land and seasons of the beautiful "driftless area" (untouched by glaciers) as it is about human nature, parenting, a child's growing awareness, and the workings of a family farm. I finished The Land Remembers and ordered three copies to give to friends. I highly, highly recommend.

A wonderful, heartwarming book that transports you to rural Wisconsin in the early decades of the 20th century. I was captivated by Ben Logan's narrative and felt like I was there!

This is a lovely story about a farm and the life values that the farm holds for its inhabitants. Readers who live/lived or spent time on farms growing up, as I did, will be able to relate to the love for the land. The author does an excellent job of expressing the attachment to a place and the memories engendered by living there. It is a keen contrast to the hectic pace of urban life and expresses what those who have never experienced farm life are missing. A lovely piece of work.

This is one of the most unbelievably beautiful pieces of literature I've ever read. It's in my list of favorite books and forever will remain. Met the author years back and visited the farm that this book is written about and it's like the author literally painted a perfect picture of this farm with his words. Very moving, very honest, very beautiful, earthy, and real.

A friend had her family farm taken after her family owning it for four generations. The city took it to build a high school. It was heartbreaking for the residents of our town and devastating for her family. I purchased this book for her letting her know the land would always remember the love her family had for it.

Mania: It's like this. . . Take the best day in your life -- the perfect wedding, the birth of a child, that great new job -- take that feeling, that intensity, and multiply it by, say, a hundred. Now stop sleeping. Begin to feel interconnected to everything and everyone. Now exist this way for about a month. Or two. Then someone tries to tell you something is wrong with all this metaphysical bliss, usually someone close to you, but by this time you have included them in the delusional explosion that is acute Mania. You see everyone, like Gorilla saw, as bit players in the magical realm you now inhabit. Eventually you come to the attention of the authorities in some way, and the tired machinery of psychiatry runs you down, wraps you up, and then you have to try to accept the fact that none of it was real.I have lived through a dozen of these experiences since 1976. Now, through "Gorilla and the Bird," I got to live through another one, without the restraints and felony charges. Mr. McDermott's story is simply the most intense, accurate, and emotionally honest trek through Mania (and out the other side) I have ever read, and the biggest bonus -- not to mention saving grace -- is the awesome power of his mother's love.A less capable writer would have been unable to craft this narrative in a way that strings together all the elements without a hint of self-pity or resentment. His superior writing brims with humor and irony, and anyone, regardless of how close or far away you are from Mania, will be able to experience it through his eyes and heart.I finished "Gorilla and the Bird" in less than two days, but I know I will return to it often.Bravo.

I really enjoyed reading this book. It was well - written and very familiar - it's like listening to someone you know tell you a secret.For me, a black female public defender from NYC, the most enlightening aspect of the book was learning about the perspective of impoverished white people in middle America. I had no idea. I was appalled by some, sympathetic to others, and rooting for the author to "win" and make it out.I think the love shared between the author and his mother is admirable and the epitome of unconditional love. I enjoyed seeing it play out on paper as a reminder that those who suffer from mental illness are human, are worthy of love, and should not be thrown away. This. ultimately, was what I took away from this book and I hope that others will read it and gain some insight and understanding and maybe even turn to advocacy.

Incredible read for many reasons:1. While I have read many books that describe mania / bipolar - the author describes his journey to understanding mania / vs. depression - vs. "stable" so clearly that during the first period of mania - I believed it was real - no mania or psychotic break. As the book (and Zach's understanding) of the condition progresses - Zack and the reader begin to be able to sense signs of manic episodes coming on. Long story short - his journey to understanding and learning to manage / live with this illness was so clearly spelled out.2. The relationship between Zack and his mother is so incredibly heart warming - and while much focuses on her helping him through this - there was just as much about him being there for her. If everyone in the world have just 1 person to support them such as this - what a place this would be.3. The amount of courage it took for both Zack and his mom to "bare all" in this book is noteworthy - and will help / encourage any reader.As a nation (world) we need to start to look at mental illness / disorders as the completely manageable conditions that they are. Health care needs to be enhanced to offer the best service and options to people who - with this help - will be able to lead normal lives even if faced with conditions such as bi-polar disorder.Please read this book!

Powerful story! I finished it in two days. This is one of the few books about mental illness where the author is able to write in a way that the reader can see the world through their eyes.

I'm a Bird who has a Gorilla who doesn't much appreciate me. I've done all that the Bird has done, flown across the country, spent every evening at the psych ward, etc. in NY, TX and CA. The Bird is fortunate. This book rings all too true. The two things left out are HIPAA and psych employees. From the Bird side of things, HIPAA is a firewall. Often, I can't even find out where my son is much less how he is nor what happened. It leaves me with anxiety, something I don't normally ever have. That heavily contributes to why a lot of folks don't have visitors. We can't find them. I can't begin to tell ya how many psych employees are entry-level, untrained, cruel, and mean spirited toward the patients. Some seem to get a kick out of egging on patients who are psychotic. That's sick! There have been too many psychiatrists who have such heavy foreign accents I can hardly understand them especially on the phone. And that's when ya can get a hold of them.All in all, the mental illness system is a mess. Wasn't it Reagan who emptied out or deinstitutionalized psychiatric hospitals and developmental centers for the mentally retarded with the promise of local community, mental health centers and group homes? Now jails and prisons and the streets have taken the place of that promise. A shameful legacy!Zach is doing well. It's good that he has a plan, knows his plan, and can tell when "it's coming on". He has hope.
