It's unbelievable how much detailed information is in this book. The organization of the book is very convenient and there are page references throughout the book to the topics being discussed. This makes it extremely easy to either read the book from front to back or to pick out a narrow topic and read about it. My only complaints are that I wish it had more color photos and a better map, but the information is more important than photos anyway. This book will definitely make planning your trip to Crete a lot easier. And it's much, much better than the Lonely Planet Crete guide. Lonely Planet publishes some great books, but its Crete guide is not one of them.

We used this book to plan our honeymoon to Crete (without ever having been to Greece before). It had great suggestions for places to visit and what to see. We used it quite a bit and could rely on it mostly being accurate. There was one hike that we couldn't quite find just through the book's descriptions, but we did a different one instead. We would highly recommend it!

At first I thought this book has too much detail and I will never use it, but now I find that is the first book I go to. I lived in Iraklion 40 years ago and I am planning my first return next April. Crete has changed a great deal, and this book is helping me to find the 'old Crete' that I remember. Rough Guide may not be helpful if you have 2 or 3 days in Crete, but I am planning an exended stay and this book has the information I want to plan my return visit.

This book has been very helpful with regard to places to activities, hotels, and restaurants. It's my first Rough Guide.

Manouevering around the guide wasn'r easy although the information is there. From an electronic guide one expects to find the information sought very easily.L. Vered

Good maps and suggestions for itineraries on the less travelled interior of the island.Comprehensive list of hotels and restaurants in the towns and cities.

As I expected, good! Somewhat hard language for us nonbritish.

My mother was born and raised in Crete and I have plenty of relatives there so I have visited the island often and have gotten to know it extremely well. There is almost NOTHING I don't know about this island. I have been using The Rough Guide in helping me to explore this island since at least 1996. The edition I used in 2005, which had been recently published, contains pretty much the same information and the same descriptions as this edition, published in 2013. As a matter of fact, I think that the older edition had slightly larger dimensions and contained more information than the current edition. It seems as if the only thing that has been updated is the prices. I guess some things just don't get better with age. If you are a first time visitor to the island then this guide is indispensable. If you are a 'regular' visitor, like me, and have a somewhat older edition of this guide then I'm not so sure if investing in this particular edition is worth it unless you feel you absolutely MUST have the most recent edition.

"Powerful as myth." —The Washington Post Book World"Beautifully written...a jewel of a book." —The New York Times Book Review"Powerful...full of magic...you won't be doing anything of importance until you have finished this book." —Los Angeles Times"Wonderful...a significant lesson in what storytelling has to do with memory and inheritance." —San Francisco Chronicle“Reading it really changed the way I thought about Asian-American history. Our heritage has a lot of difficult stuff in it — a lot of misogyny, a lot of fear and rage and death. It showed me a past that reached beyond borders and languages and cultures to bring together these disparate elements of who we are. I hadn’t seen our history like that before. At that time, we hadn’t seen a lot of Asian-American representations anywhere, so it was a big deal that it even existed. It made me feel validated and seen. That’s what’s so important about books like that. You feel like, Oh my god, I exist here. I exist in this landscape of literature and memoir. I’m here, and I have a story to tell, and it’s among the canon of Asian-American stories that are feminist and that are true to our being. It’s a book that has stayed with me and lived in me.” —Margaret Cho

I am aware that many people and critics have given much critical acclaim for The Joy Luck Club, and how today it's considered a modern classic novel of the Asian-American experience. First of all, Amy Tan is an excellent writer. The only good things i can say about this book is how it examines the relationships between mother and daughter, American stereotypes of Asians, and i like how Amy Tan allows all of the mothers and daughters to have their own voice with each of their narratives. The only problem i have with this novel, however, is that all of the characters and their narratives are so one-dimensional, and she herself seems to stereotype her own characters and their men. Even though Amy Tan does make a few points about America's perception of Asian-Americans, and the stereotypes, she doesn't really break new ground with it. It's common knowledge that Asian get stereotyped, pretty much all minorities do. And she doesn't really break those stereotypes, to some degree she kind of enhances non-Asians to actually believe those stereotypes. And all in all, i just feel that the stories are not very consistent. Some seem to correlate with another story, and some just seem kind of random. And in my opinion, they are pretty forgettable. The only memorable story was Jing-Mei Woo: "The Joy Luck Club," where she learns more about her mother and discovers that she has 2 half-sisters in China. I kind of thought that the rest of the book would be more about that, and more about the Joy Luck Club in general. But after that it just felt as if i were reading short stories from highschool portfolios. I dunno, overall, an interesting read, but based on what i read i don't really understand why this book is considered a "classic" for no other reason in that it examines the relationships between mother and daughters very well. It doesn't necessarily make it a memorable book that i will read years later. And like i said before, just because the characters are Asian and they talk about the problems of stereotypes and cultural differences between the ones they came from and the one they moved in doesn't necessarily make it the BEST book that talks about the Asian-American experience. I just think there are better books out there that can make this same message without making it seem so predictable and one-dimensional.

A sensitive, multi-generational story of mothers and daughters, cousins and aunties, intertwined with the stories of the mothers as young girls in China and the conflicts and similarities of the generations.Four immigrant Chinese women, Suyuan, An-Mei, Lindo and Ying Ying, survivors of their traumatic pasts, each relate their own stories in vivid detail, in the hope of teaching their American daughters to believe in themselves and achieve a better life in America.Having grown up in America, the daughters, Jing Mei, Rose, Waverly, and Lena, in turn relate their struggles to understand their mothers, and the cultural differences and divisions between them. The book is descriptive, emotional, warm, and intelligent, as well as informative, Should not be missed! Recommended.

I'm a huge fan of Amy Tan..... I have read all her books, have shared them, read them again, and again..... this I think was her first book (or first made into a movie), it's been years and decided to read again and couldn't find, so ordered and loved it so much, I got one for my daughter also (I'm keeping this copy for me). This is not just a story of 4 friends and their 4 daughters.... it's the story of each mother having a history, that changed them, having friendships for decades, and how we must never assume we know it all. Four friends from China, different stories for each, and how each tries to reach their daughters who were born in America, and who have no inkling of the rich and stormy past to bring them to this place and time. Each mother is trying to reach their child, to share lessons, to help them find their Chinese side inside of them. Reminds me how a mother sees more than her child realizes.Wonderful how Amy Tam weaves the tales from one daughter back to the mothers story, and you become invested in each of their lives. A rich and life affirming look at relationships. Loved it.Magical !

This is my third read through this book, and it just keeps getting better. The characters and stories are all relatable in some ways, and confounding in others. The breadth of experiences described in these stories means that at any point, some are directly relevant in my life, and others I can hardly imagine ever being true for anyone, even though I know they are. I first read this book in my early teens, and will probably read it again in a few years. I keep finding new gems in it, that I didn't have the experience to understand on the previous read.

If you're looking for a plot, don't bother. If you're looking for character development and a description of cultural conflict between generations, this is your book. I confess to being a little confused on the characters from segment to segment and I think the author could have differentiated the mothers better. That having been said, it was a delightful read.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. These are heartfelt stories of mothers and daughters and their tumultuous relationships and journeys through life. Each woman tells a story of her past which ultimately effects her future in fascinating ways. The only problems I had reading the e-book was I had to go back and match up mothers and daughters which would have been easier with a paper back! The realizations of love and understanding come to each character as their stories resolve into present day. I was sad to get to the end of the book.

I purchased this book to read with my daughter. It was required summer reading for her literature class but I knew we'd both enjoy it as part of our private book club too. It's so well written and contains so many teachable moments. We discussed mother-daughter dynamics, red flags in relationships, and tons more. Simply a good read. We rented the movie after completing the book to get a different perspective - that's always fun!

his is an excellent history of the Spanish conquest of Peru and its aftermath. Detailed history of Inca resistance and initial losses. It was a much hard fought colonization than usually presented in history books. Give lush detail on the activities of the later Inca emperor in their struggle to rid themselves of the Spanish. The one drawback is that MacQuarrie give little ;credit to the Indian allies of the Spanish. He makes it sound like a small band of Spanish on horses fended off hundreds of thousands of the Incas and there allies in one siege that last for more than a year. At the same time, it is clear that the Incas had powerful native enemies. This part of the story is hardly convincing. Otherwise it is a great read,

This is a great overview of the Incas after their first contact with the Spanish. I picked up this book after traveling to Peru as I was just fascinated by everything Inca when I was there and realized how little I knew. I would recommend you read this book BEFORE you go to Peru if you are going; picturing thousands of warriors standing atop Sacsaywaman fighting 100 Spanish knights, and being able to see the walls they stood on would be breathtaking.Sadly, this book really only focuses on the Spanish conquest, but this is not the fault of the author. The lack of writing, and the ruthless culling of all things local by the Spanish after their arrival, means that the specifics of the Inca's history is incredibly sparse pre-conquest.Definitely a great book to read if you are interested in the Incas.

I am amazed at the level of detail in this book right from the first footsteps in the foreign land. Incredible read that places you in the heart of historical battles and conquest as if you were there. One such battle, puts 200 Conquistadors (and slaves) against an Inca army of 20,000 warriors the author puts you in the very heart of the battle so you can not help but feel the rising panic in your throat as you read.A Very well researched book that explores not only the differing cultures but highlights mans unflinching avarice and greed, often becoming more savage than the "savages" being conquered in the name of a God the inca never could comprehend or understand.

I do recommend this book but there are two issues I have:1. The author basically exonerates the Incan leadership of any blame for the defeats by Pizarro. Of course no one can know how long the Incans could have held out against a continuous onslaught of Spanish over time, but better leadership from Atahualpa and Pizzaro is an unknown person in history. The Incans like the Romans got a Commodus when they needed a Marcus Aurelius...2. The author does not do a very good job of showing the exploitative structure that was the Incan Empire. For sure the Incas had better government than the Aztecs, but it was still a very exploitative structure...in fact, the encomienda system was very similar to the Incan system. All this said, this is overall a very good book and I would highly recommend it.

This is an excellent book, and does a superb job in detailing the last years of the Inca Empire. Kim has done a marvellous job in bringing the last years of the Inca Empire. I had read about this vaguely, but this brought a whole new world to life.He has been balanced in his approach, and while he undoubtedly indicts the Spanish for their appalling behaviour, he does, subtly, show that they were brave (but, cruel) men, who had no respect for the Inca culture. This is, however, not restricted to the Spanish. The English did not respect Indian culture when they came into India. My own countrymen have been guilty of similar transgressions, I am sure, when the South Indian kings spread Hindu culture in South Easy Asia. This does not excuse the Spaniards, however. The last days have been brought to life in a manner that is sad, exciting, tragic all rolled into one. Yes, I agree with the reviewer "CJA' in that he could have spoken about how the Spanish subsequently tried to stamp out the Inca culture, but I would not have traded this for the tale of how the ruins were discovered. All in all, a marvellous book.

Kim MacQuarrie provides a well-written, and engaging telling of the first Spanish incursions into Peru, from the Extremadura origins of the Pizarro family, to the execution of Atahualpa and beyond. I picked this up because I was planning a trip to Peru, and, specifically, Lima, Cuzco, Machu Picchu and Puno. At halfway through the book, I've learned a great deal about the pre-Colombian societies that pre-dated the rise of the Inca, the story of the rise of the Inca, the complicated succession struggles among Inca royalty, the Spanish designs on manipulating the Inca leaders to increase their wealth and gain social standing and so forth. The tale is a bloody one, but MacQuarrie tells it well, and gives a thorough accounting of all the major players. The book comes complete with illustrations and quotes pertinent to each historical period. I strongly recommmend this as a read for someone with little to no knowledge of Peruvian history.

Great book for younger kids.

my little girls enjoyed this book. I hope to use it in their preschool class in order to educate the kids on Chinese New Year.

A nice non-fiction book to teach about the Chinese New Year. It covers the traditions well and has good pictures.

it is what you paid for. A thin book, and simple illustrations. I don't know other books to buy either.

My children enjoyed the story. The book also generated lots of question and lots of exploring language and art. I Teach 4 & 5 year old children.
