I work with people who cringe when the words "Agile" or "Transformation" are mentioned. They have become such loaded words that I have banned them from my vocabulary and I approach each book on the topic with extreme skepticism - your typical "agile" books are often so full of recycled dogma and prescriptive "recipes", you can often skim through the entire thing in 20 minutes because you have read it all before. That's why I was so surprised with this book - I stumbled upon it while browsing the new books section in another electronic book service I am not sure I can name in here, and at first, I thought it was a good collection of some of the most useful resources out there (not just for agile transformations) - Cynefin, Schneider's culture model, Beyond Budgeting, Cost of Delay, Jobs to be Done, and others. It does it in a way that is accessible yet practical and provides plenty of sources that people can go to and explore if they want to go deeper. It doesn't feel prescriptive, it's like a friend telling you "here are all these tools you can use, and here is how you would use them if it makes sense for your context and the complexity you are dealing with". This is reinforced with stories, many from the author's experience, which are in most cases quite engaging.Based on the opening chapters and that first impression, it would be tempting to dismiss the book as a nice introduction to known material (although I don't think most of these resources have reached mainstream status even among "agile" professionals), but then the second half of the book goes into detail on how the author has been using these tools to help organizations move to new ways of working. These final (and lengthy) chapters are terrific - they would make for an excellent starting point when facing a similar challenge, it does tell you how to deal with organizational structures, innovation, strategy and execution, people and more. I would have loved to have this book a few years ago, but if like me, you are already deep into this work, you will find yourself relating, smiling, nodding with your head and taking notes, because at least in my case, there are many things in here that I know I can build new ideas and experiments on - highly recommended.

You’ll want this book to read, and to keep close to your desk, if you’re interested high performance workplaces. The big aspiration of the book, which the author delivers on, is to show how to grow and sustain agility in an entire enterprise, and to thrive amidst constant change. But the book’s journey starts from the ground up, and you’ll get usable information at each step.Even if your current goal involves only a smaller organization or just one team – regardless of whether you’ve had experience with Scrum or Kanban or are just starting out – you’ll learn from Unlocking Agility. He provides the historical background for the emergence of the agile movement and illustrates the practices across the spectrum of lean, agile, XP, Scrum and Kanban. And he guides you through all the aspects of implementing the transformation from the ground up.Then finally, you arrive at the enterprise level. F. Scott Fitzgerald famously said: “The test of a first-rate intelligence is the ability to hold two opposed ideas in mind at the same time and still retain the ability to function.” The author deals with the tension in large enterprises that must simultaneously deliver goods and services efficiently in a highly competitive market while also creating the innovations that may indeed disrupt their existing businesses. He shows how to think about, allocate resources, and choose management schemes to deal with the dichotomy between efficiency and innovation. The book works well because the writing style is uniformly accessible, and the level of detail is just right. There’s enough background to put the entire context together, with illustrations and tables that bring clarity to the discussion, but plenty of references if you want to dive deeper. His roadmaps and heuristics for putting ideas into practice generously share the benefit of his years of experience in clear, step by step detail. An example of how this book makes itself really useful is the fraught topic of metrics. Metrics generates controversy in the agile community when it’s not swept under the rug. But the author shows why empiricism, and the need to measure wisely, is at the heart of agility especially as it scales. And, he makes concrete suggestions. This is a book for people who want to take action.

I read a TON of agile books (1, 2 a month) and this is BY FAR THE BEST agile book I've read in almost 2 years. Most books are "single-threaded" in the sense that they pick one topic and go really deep on said topic ("I-shaped"?) whereas this book runs the gamut. Jorgen expertly weaves many different topics, trains of thought, methodologies, and approaches to create an engaging read on how to holistically help an enterprise unlock their agile potential. Some of the topics included in this book (off the top of my head): Cynefin, sociocracy/holocracy, LaLoux's Teal Organizations, Nassim Taleb, BOSSA Nova, OpenSpace, Beyond Budgeting, scaling frameworks, metrics, Schneider's Reengineering Alternative...the list is nearly endless. There's also some phenomenal graphics included in the book; the section on business agility metrics and the 3 phases of a transformation were so pithy yet brilliant that I took photos and emailed them to coworkers. I can't recommend this enough...buy two copies, 1 for home, 1 for the office!DISCLAIMER - A podcast I'm part of is mentioned in the book.

GREAT book! well-written and full of practical advice. My mentor, who himself wrote 2 widely-read books on enterprise ability, recommended that I read "Unlocking Agility", and I'm so glad he did! Definitely a worthy addition to the discerning enterprise agile coach's library

I just love the practical orientation of this book. Love the AWG chapter and secret sauce to inspiring people. Having been in a multi year transformation journey myself the phases are reassuring with real life experience. Great work!
