Simon Travers-Spencer is a menswear graduate of the prestigious Central St. Martin's College of Art and Design in London. He has illustrated for Dunhill, worked as a tailor's assistant at Watts & Co., and as a production assistant at the design studio Tristan Webber. He is currently developing his own label collection.

I love this book! So resourceful and easy to use. It teaches you how to go about your fashion research, gives you really good examples of mood boards and it even comes with a croquis that you can copy for illustration use. I love the plethora of clothing illustration, names of clothing styles and ideas that this book provides. It also provides pictures of runway models and the type of style of clothing that they are wearing so that you are knowledgeable about your stuff. Definitely a must-have!

This is one of those books that is not necessary for your sewing library, but it diffently comes in play as you go to modify an existing pattern or are trying to name some style of fashion you are interested in. I use it soley for that. When I modify my TNT (tried and true) patterns to achive a new look I like to see some ideas and this book provide that for me. It also has a fashion history in the front if I am interested in a 'period' fashion detail. Is it a 'must' have for the home sewer? - No probably not. However, it is a great home sewing library addition for ideas, inspirations and review of fashion details.

I teach fashion design and construction to high school students and actually ordered this book as a resource for my students. After it arrived and I really got to peruse it, I strongly recommended each of them to purchase the book. It is a steal! The silhouettes, sleeve types, skirt types, etc. are all crucial elements for designers to mix and match--just like the title implies! It includes the muse, your inspiration boards, presenting a collection, etc. I strongly recommend it.

While Project Runway has been an inspiration to many, the world of fashion design does require talent. The Fashion Designer's Directory of Shape and Style is a great book for a person seeking to really begin to understand design and fashion.If you're a person who loves to experiment with changing clothing patterns or making your own, this book will get you thinking and playing with fabric and new designs. You could design a whole new look for yourself!

Excellent reference book. Lots of photos of style examples.

The book has so many different shapes and styles rendered that I found it particularly helpful as a reference while I was doing flats. Sometimes I would struggle from imagining how a garment would sit on the body compared to how it would lay out flat and with all of the various examples, the book is a huge help as a guide in creating your own designs.

They have done the hard work for you by collating all the necessary information, but I would say it helps only beginners a lot as compared to somebody who is already in the field for a couple of years having a much bigger directory of styles than in this book.

As a first time beginner student in fashion I have found this book quite helpful in understanding designs and how to make collections for construction.
