Fun alternate history with dragons and napoleon. What's not to like? Characters and situations feel period and authentic, especially the naval stuff. Dragons fit in without totally dominating the scene. Very nuanced and complex setting and characters with a plot that showcases them. I am writing this while about halfway through book 5 and it keeps getting better. Nothing is two dimensional, and few characters are wholly evil or good. Great stuff.. i'll keep reading; so should you. This one turns things on its head in many ways. Great plot twists and new introductions, things are getting more complex and nuanced as we go.

I️ thoroughly enjoyed the Temeraire series, right up until this book. Like the others, it was well-written with a brand new setting and a brand new plot. However, the plot while starting out good, wobbled in the middle, and collapsed entirely in the end. Maybe someone else could appreciate the wishful deviation from history and what will assuredly be a miraculous recovery from the ending in the next book, but not me. I’m done with the Temeraire series, which saddens me because it was, up until this book, a very pleasant, historically brilliant series to read.

This series about the dragon Temeraire and his presumptive master Captain Will Laurence is an alternate history of the Napoleonic Wars. Both the dragon and Laurence are the protagonists, heroes and really more equals than master/animal. Temeraire and the other dragons in the series are sentient, philosophical and mostly more intelligent than the humans who ride them into battle. But the plots in the series (up to 8 or 9 books by now) get to be awfully repetitive. However, I have read each one that is currently in print and will read her next one when it appears in print.

Naomi Novik steps up the story in EMPIRE OF IVORY - while in previous novels Temeraire and Captain Laurence travel to places such as China; where dragons are treated with respect to Istanbul; where dragons are feared. Now we view them in South Africa - as ancestors to an ancient tribe. But why are Laurence and Temeraire in Africa? That is exactly what makes this book so incredibly fascinating.Instead of the typical strategy and war that I've come to expect of the Temeraire novels this book deals with an epidemic among the dragons. They are sick and dying and there is one cure that can be given to them, a cure which has its roots in Africa.Laurence is treated with more harshness than he has been in the past in EMPIRE OF IVORY and the politics of slave-trading come to a fevered high point in this story. It's fascinating to me to see how the characters grow in these books and with the ending of the story it seems that Naomi Novik has finally made that step into cliff-hanger territory. I cannot imagine reading this book and having to wait months until the next one was put out. This was the most fun I've had since EMPIRE OF JADE and I am looking forward to picking up VICTORY OF EAGLES.

Naomi Novik is a writer to continue to watch and the Temeraire Series is a delight to read. I've not been as looking forward to a next book in a series for quite some time. What Novik does better than most writers in a series is to avoid the temptation of rewriting a previously successful book and manages to introduce new themes. In Empire of Ivory, Novik again changes the venue and moves the theater of operations within the Napoleonic wars to Africa where the social elements of slavery are furthered through through the interaction between the main characters Lawrence and the dragon who seems more human than some of the other characters through the continued internal and external conversations that take place. The naivity would likely not succeed in a typical construct in a traditional historical novel, but somehow, adding the fantasy dragon element here apart from just being entertaining and fascinating to consider, it makes the conversations and the moral and ethical underpinnings work and this is more thank most novels of this genre ever achieve.A remarkable book in a remarkable series.5 stars!Bart Breen

This book is the fourth installment in the ongoing adventures of Captain William Laurence and the dragon Temeraire in the service of His Majesty's air corps during the Napoleonic Wars.Obviously, this is an alternate history series. The only fantasy lies in the differing points in history, and the existence of dragons who are as intelligent (if not more) than most people. In this adventure, the dragons of England are seriously ill, and dying, of a terrible illness. Temeraire had had a similar one, but had recovered. Laurence and Temeraire, along with his crew, sail to South Africa in search of a remedy. What they find there is the wonderful story of this book, a remarkable, marvelously readible adventure that leads them deep into the heart of Africa. The denouement of the story can't be discussed here without creating a spoiler. Let's just say that if you read this book, you will be desperate to read the sequel!I recommend this book to anyone who loves a fine story, a unique universe to get lost in!

I feel this installment to be the best of the series so far. Most of the main themes are expanded upon, characters are further defined, the war progresses, and the entire alternate world begins to take shape as a whole. This book, I feel, answers many questions you probably have after the previous book such as:- How do other cultures around the world interact with dragons- What has happened to the other British dragons and captains?- How strong is the captain/dragon bond?- How are relations between Navy and Ariel Corps when it really comes down to it?- Plus others, but I don't want to point out spoilersIf you thought Throne of Jade and Black Powder War were more of setup books for the overall plot this installment will satisfy your questions and need for some action.
