Review

Praise of this edition: The best general biography of Henry VIII in nearly half a century: comprehensive in coverage, judicious in analysis, and pleasurable to read. - Peter Marshall, University of Warwick, UK An excellent book that is up-to-date and wide-ranging, from policy-making and faction to visual display and material culture. It is packed with illuminating evidence and orientates the reader effectively through the complex historiographical debates. Dr Wooding provides a well-balanced biography of Henry, paying as much attention to his early years as to the 1530s and 1540s. Essential reading for students and other scholars. - Natalie Mears, Durham University, UK Praise of the first edition: As a primer in the key developments and personalities of the period … the book works excellently. As well as providing a reliable, conventional narrative … there are useful digressions into everything from Tudor food to Tudor climate. Most winningly of all, the book recognises that the central interpretative challenge for anyone writing about Henry is to explain how he mutated from a learned, attractive, doted-upon young king into someone regarded by many of his subjects - and many modern historians - as little more than a tyrant… – The Tablet Lucy Wooding’s readable one-volume study comprehensively updates J.J. Scarisbrick’s classic 1968 biography and deftly charts a middle way through ongoing controversies. Unlike some other discussions of the king, it gives due weight to the years 1509-1525. – History Review Lucy Wooding covers the whole reign, necessarily drawing on others’ work, expounding and reviewing it in a way that students will greet with joy. A long afternoon in the company of her book, deftly used, will give them an air of easy familiarity with the great debates of the past few decades … She takes her own line at every point, formulates her judgments in fluent and pointed prose, and illustrates her case liberally with quotations from chronicles, letters and formularies of faith. – Times Literary Supplement As the 500th anniversary of Henry VIII's accession looms, a superabundance of judgments - scholarly and otherwise - on the king's life and times will bombard readers.  This new offering in the Routledge Historical Biography series, however, is a most welcome addition to Henrician studies. – D.R. Bisson, Belmont University, CHOICE, Vol. 46, No. 11, July 2009 The author does a wonderful job of telling a gripping story that also gives a sense of the complexity of the reign and the period … Readers will be well instructed about a very significant period of English history―and they will be entertained as well. – Anne McLaren, University of Liverpool, UK

Anyone interested in the Tudors these days has a galaxy of books to choose from, ranging from historical fiction to academic explorations. This latter category alone spans volumes exploring all aspects of life during the 16th century, as well as focusing on individual monarchs and ministers. Whatever your interest, there is something for everyone. Given this range and the quality of the authorship, why choose this grossly overpriced book ($45 for a 354 page paperback) over other, cheaper choices? Because it is a superb analysis of Henry VIII’s character and reign, forwarding the author’s perspectives on academic points of contention and her own interpretations of events. Not every notion is original, but all are given a fresh gloss through Wooding’s lucid prose.Throughout Wooding’s book, she strives to make Henry’s actions and motivations understandable. She is correct when she writes “It is easy and memorable to condemn” him, and “it is important not to demonize Henry without understanding the political basis for many of his actions.” Negative portrayals are only a partial account of a more complex narrative. Her ideas offer plausible and thought-provoking explanations for how Henry saw various situations, giving even his most deplorable behavior some semblance of reason. At times, her defenses sound very much like excuses his excesses. Savage attacks are explained as desperate acts to gain political security for Edward, and harsh vengeance as more often than not based on substance.Throughout the book, we see that Henry’s conviction that he was in the right was coupled with an inability to understand that people could be genuinely unconvinced by his arguments. Since he saw himself as acting for the good of the realm with his Great Matter and religious reforms, disagreement threatened national security and was seen as treason. On a more personal level, disagreement was regarded as disloyal and a betrayal. This inability to accept that people could reasonably see matters differently was Henry’s tragic flaw, and people died because of it.Wooding offers us a careful analysis of Henry’s religious policies during the 1530s and 1540s, with an eye toward demonstrating that they represented a generally coherent point of view that held a steady course between Protestantism and Catholicism. This view was revised as Henry’s ideas evolved, and clarified when he felt that he had been misinterpreted. She refutes the idea of any vacillation between them, and presents strong arguments against the power of factions to manipulate Henry on religion or any other subject. The discussion of the 16th century mindset proved especially fascinating. Wooding explains the political importance of image at that time. Lavish displays, such as those at the Field of the Cloth of Gold, had political meaning and significance. Ostentation was necessary to uphold royal authority, and expected of the king and his ministers. Wolsey lived in splendor because to do otherwise tarnished Henry’s magnificence. The jousting, hunting, and hawking, Henry so loved were not irresponsible, hedonistic pursuits, but promoted the image of a strong, capable king. Wooding asserts here that Henry was keenly interested in government and actively directed its course. As disagreeable as many of his deeds were, there is nevertheless a certain poignant quality about Henry that comes out in Wooding’s presentation. The beginning of his reign seems like a halcyon dream, ruled by an exuberant, admired young king who enjoyed the love of his subjects. Then comes his Great Matter, the chrysalis which transformed his rule into a series of unwelcome policies and his character into one of suspicion, insecurity, and intimidation. All the hope, all the potential of the early years were swept away. Adulation gave way to opposition, subsequent marriages failed to give Henry lasting happiness (although he did finally get the son he wanted), and his final years were marred by fears that his son would inherit an unstable realm and divisive court. As for Henry’s wives, Wooding has nothing bad to say about any of them and even makes a point of mentioning Katherine Howard’s redeeming features.Wooding ends the book with a discussion of Henry’s failures and achievements, and the legacy he bequeathed his children, his country, and the future. With modern perspectives and interests uncovering new ways to understand the intricacies of his world, his enduring appeal after 500 years is sure to continue.*Also included is a mouthwatering list of suggested reading covering a range of topics. It’s a nice touch to list journal articles as well as books.
