About the Author
ANDY KIRKPATRICK has a reputation for seeking out routes where the danger is real and the return is questionable, pushing himself on some of the hardest walls and faces in the Alps and beyond. He was born and raised on a council estate in Hull, one of the UK's flattest cities, and suffered from severe dyslexia, which went undiagnosed until he was 19. Good book but stories were broken up. He wrote a lot about his wife in the book and then left us dangling about what happened to their relationship after he completed the Reticent Wall.
This is one terrific read. Andy reveals his thoughts, fears, and insufferable drive to succeed. Descriptions of his falls are hair-raising, and when this world class climber wisely retreats, or tops out with purpose and satisfaction, we can only stand to applaud and tip our hats (helmets) in respect.
Andy Kirkpatrick is crazy, but he alludes to this in the title and he further details his insanity in the story he tells. It's a great read and it didn't take me too long because it sucked me in and I just had to know what happened next.
Very good book to read, the right combination of fear and fun. We'll written, and you gain some insight on what it takes to climb.
`Psychovertical' is the excellent autobiographical book from Andy Kirkpatrick that quite rightly won the Boardman Trasker prize in 2008. It follows his life in climbing and is written in an accessible and engrossing way. This follows the format of having alternate chapters, with one telling the story of his major climb `The Reticent' on the big wall El Capitan and the others recounting other past climbs and events from his life. You flick back and forth between these events and single climb until you have a real feel for what makes Andy tick and inspires him to climb. Many parts of this book had me chuckling out loud or smiling to myself and the humour contrasted well with the danger that is inherent in climbing. There are two colour photo section that illustrate the various stories he tells, as well as a few black and white line drawings to show some of the technical equipment he uses. If you have read and if you enjoyed other climbing books, then this one should feature highly on your wish list. Kirkpatrick writes with style and humour and this makes for a couple of days excellent reading. Highly recommended.Feel free to check out my blog which can be found on my profile page.
Andy is really my type of climber. This book is honestly tied with Steve houses as the best climbing book i have ever read. I laughed my ass off reading this book. I also was terrified thinking Andy was gonna die. He weaves and laces his stories into the fabric of his life. You feel like you know him. There are some solemn parts too, the stuff about his wife and kids is real. Every time i do a dangerous climb i think about my family too.This and the Steve House book are the two MUST READ books in this category. I have a waiting list for my copies to be borrowed...
Climbers will def enjoy. Great read. It captures the love, excitement, thrilling effort and mind of a climber very well. Not too technical for non-climbers to read and not too "explainy" for knowledgeable readers to be annoyed. More of a memoir and reflection of a very interesting, introspective, climber persona. Dig it.
I thought this was a great book, Andy plays down all his achievements and is extremely honest about his weaknesses. I couldn't put it down and was willing him on through all the challenges and amazed at how he's gone about achieving his goals and his singlemindedness.
