While documented and accurate, those who seek a deeply serious tome won't find it here. That said, I thought it was a terrific read on some of the more "obscure" stories of the war, as it was intended to be. I've read a lot of Civil War history (taught history at university for 30 years), As I read this, I imaged Rowland sharing some of these stories at the Antietam battlefield, and the humor would absolutely add to his presentation. It would add to it in a university class as well. Perhaps one reason people have a negative attitude toward the field of history is that it is so ponderous and weighty. It's okay to lighten it up a bit. Excellent coverage on the ladies, especially Anna Ella Carroll; also on Daniel Sickles and Joshua Chamberlain.

A book full of strange anomalies and "obscure stories" yet I didn't feel compelled to read the whole book. It was entertaining and some things were provocative, but having read a lot of history about the Civil War, I knew much of the context. This is fine book, nothing detrimental I can say about it. I would encourage people to read it for its commentary if nothing else.

War is hell, and reading about it can be, too, but not with this book. Rowland's style is witty and entertaining. I learned so much about the war that I had never known...so much left out of our history books for the sake of glory. Both sides fumbled frequently, and it was enlightening to see the reality. The story was ended on a note of dignity and honor ... For both sides.

If you are a Civil War buff, little, if anything, in this book will be new-you can probably fill out the stories told here with more detail yourself (I sure could on Joshua Chamberlain, and I've only studied his life from readings online). The writing is okay, but not really captivating. This would be a good book to get someone who has just started studying the Civil War, but is a yawn for anyone who has spent any time reading about this conflict.

For some time I have been clipping columns written by Tim Rowland from the "Hagerstown Herald", where we read them, to send to a close friend in Washington, D.C. who also likes his sense of humor and choice of rustic farmhouse topics to liven up the day's news. This friend has been so taken with his writing that she forwards all the clippings to a relative in Texas who previously edited a small town paper and lived in a semi-rural suburban setting that sounds like Tim's, with lots of animals around. When I tried to "edit" my choices of which columns to clip, she protested that her relatives were so fond of them, I should collect absolutely all of them. I thought she'd be pleased with Tim's move "up" to writing a book of curious but true tales of this area in Civil War times. Since "Strange and Obscure Stories of the Civil War" probably is not on the New York Times bestseller list, I wasn't sure I would find it on Amazon.com but it was there and made a good Christmas gift buy for this buddy. It was an easy way to move through my shopping list. Once it was in my hands, I couldn't resist speed-reading it for myself before wrapping it up.

Easy reading and highly entertaining. You might pick up a bit about the civil war, but that is really not the author's intent here. Nice layout in terms of story ordering and selection and the pictures/portraits really helped to visualize the people and events. Highly recommended even if you don't count yourself as a civil war buff.

These stories gave a vibrancy to the dry history I studied in high school 50+ years ago. The enlisted men and their officers became alive to me as the author revisited some of the historic battles. Even more revealing was the first hand accounts of their daily drudgery and struggles to survive. I highly recommend this to any reader who is interested in the cataclysm of the Civil War and the people who fought and died or survived.

If you are a history buff, you will enjoy reading this book of a variety of lesser known heroes of the United States Civil War. The author impressed upon readers the loyalty that these players displayed in the war He also wrote about some despicable characters as well. However, most impressive were those who served with honor and treated winners or no winners with respect.
