About the Author

Sean Wilentz is the author of Bob Dylan in America (2010) and The Rise of American Democracy: Jefferson to Lincoln (2005), for which he won the Bancroft Prize. He is the George Henry Davis 1886 Professor of American History at Princeton University. Wilentz’s father and uncle were co-owners of the legendary Eighth Street Bookshop in Greenwich Village, and he grew up in the world that Fred W. McDarrah captured with his lens. He lives in Princeton, New Jersey.

This book blew me away. This is the bohemian NY that is lost forever, a place where celebrity meant something very different than it does today, when people of the highest calibre lived the lowest lives and they were approachable! Somehow McDarrah accomplished something remarkable, day by day, shot by shot, capturing the soul of a place back when it still had one. I love this book!

I moved to NYC in 1978 and I quickly became aware of Fred W. McDarrah's photos in the Village Voice. The photos in this book are incredibly nostalgic and they're a wonderful look back at another era.
