From Publishers Weekly

Christian spiritual disciplines are all the rage, and joining the legions of "how-to" books reintroducing contemporary Christians to ancient practices is this offering by Barton, a spiritual director and retreat leader (Invitation to Solitude and Silence). With elegant writing and a personal touch, she covers the basics handily—the role of desire and longing in relationship with God, praying with scripture, and the need for solitude, self-examination, discernment and Sabbath. She concludes with an exercise that helps one develop a "rule of life," or commitment to "structure and space for our growing." What makes Barton's handbook different from the rest is her personality; she describes the practices with the gentle touch of an understanding and knowing mystic, telling her own stories along the way. Barton recounts the time she and her bicycle were run over by a minivan (miraculously, she was not seriously hurt) and as she recuperated, she pondered whether this accident was a time to reconsider her need for Sabbath: "I did not want to acknowledge the possibility that it was that hard for God to get my attention." This book is a wonderful starting point for Christians eager to more deeply explore the life of the Spirit. (Mar. 30) Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. Review

"[Barton] describes the practices with the gentle touch of an understanding and knowing mystic."--Publishers Weekly, January 29, 2006"Our natural tendency is to push, work longer and strive. In a kind, compelling and beautiful voice Ruth Haley Barton invites us to listen to an inner pulse that can be heard only when we are quiet. The path is one that Ruth has walked with honesty and integrity. The fruit of her labor is a sweet call to know our lives need not be harried or harbor fruitless exhaustion."--Dan B. Allender, Ph.D., professor and former president, Mars Hill Graduate School, and author of The Wounded Heart"Ruth Barton confirms what you've suspected--there is more to life than what most of us are living. This volume serves as a great primer for helping us get in touch with and follow our longings--all the way to God!"--Reggie McNeal, author of The Present Future and A Work of Heart"Ruth Haley Barton offers much wise, sane, concrete help for people who are ready for the 'more' of God amidst their busy lives, and want a better way to arrange their lives to receive God's transforming presence. She clearly spells out an excellent rhythm of classical spiritual practices that can keep us open and available to God's transforming actions in and among us. She grounds these practices in our own deepest desires, connecting those desires with God's desire for our well-being. She shares some of her own personal experiences as a sometimes struggling Christian in an honest and inspiring way. She gives very helpful guidelines for using the book within a group of people who are seeking to create better conditions in their lives to receive God's transforming presence. I think this book will be of enormous value to individuals and groups who are seeking to more fully ground all dimensions of their often fragmented and hectic daily lives in the liberating ground of God's transforming presence, with the help of a rhythm of vital spiritual practices that can keep us available to that loving presence."--Tilden Edwards, author of Sabbath Time and Living in the Presence"Ruth Barton confirms what you've suspected there is more to life than what most of us are living. This volume serves as a great primer for helping us get in touch with and follow our longings all the way to God!"--Reggie McNeal, author of The Present Future and A Work of Heart""Blessed is the person who has some voice in her or his life saying what Ruth Haley Barton says. Sacred Rhythms is a book I have treasured."--Trey Turner, The Baptist Standard, June 9, 2008I think this book will be of enormous value to individuals and groups who are seeking to more fully ground all dimensions of their often fragmented and hectic daily lives in the liberating ground of God's transforming presence, with the help of a rhythm of vital spiritual practices that can keep us available to that loving presence."--Tilden Edwards, author of Sabbath Time and Living in the Presence"Too many people are suffering with CFS (Christian Fatigue Syndrome). Ruth Haley Barton is herself a CFS survivor, and she shares here--in a warm and personal yet lucid and thoughtful writing style--how she has been restored to life's sacred rhythms. My experience mirrors hers, and I will enthusiastically recommend this book widely--both as preventative medicine and as needed therapy."--Brian McLaren, speaker and author of A New Kind of Christian

Follow the Apostle Paul's admonition and filter this through the truth of God's Word. Look up verses and evaluate their context. Not only did I read this book but I also listened to the author in person numerous times as she taught at a women's retreat where she took God's Word and used it for her agenda. Beware. There is also a new age influence in her writing. I do not believe her approach to the Word of God is biblical or accurate. Jesus deserves the glory. He is the way, the truth and the life. Any writing should glorify Him not man/self or feelings. I was saved out of the new age movement and am very sensitive to its influences. This book disturbed me. Flee!!

"Sacred Rhythms" came to me at a time when my woundings were keeping me from wanting to do what I knew I should. Desires tell you what's below the surface: if you don't heed the significance of your desires, you won't understand how your disappointments are causing your faith to "leak". Ruth Haley Barton's perspective brought breakthrough for me at a dangerous time. This book is especially helpful to those who (like the author and me) have gotten burned out and need to recover freshness and passion for the very familiar. Reading "Sacred Rhythms" brought about perhaps the sweetest and gentlest restoration of faith I have ever experienced in my long walk. And it voiced some of my deepest longings FOR God. Her treatment of Psalm 139 was not only sweet, it finally gave me a satisfying answer for why a nasty imprecatory prayer "mars" an otherwise beautiful chapter (my words, not hers). And for the first time, I found my own life's watchword expressed by the pen of another: "For the Christian person, the choices we make are always about love and which choice enables us to keep following God into love" (pp. 117-118). Gaining the capacity to "reliquish whatever might keep me from choosing for love" (p. 119) has become my life's quest in recent years. Never had I seen it expressed as winsomely as Barton does, however.Still, Barton is careful not get the cart before the horse. The first portion of the book necessarily coaches us on how to "recognize the unconditional love and presence of God as the ultimate and unchanging reality of our life" (p.95). Read that again, and then ask yourself: "What if the ultimate (essential) and unchanging reality of my life really were the unconditional love and presence of God? How would my motivation and passion change?" Mine did, through soaking in the gentle message of this compelling book.

I have just begun reading this book and the intro and first chapters have hooked me.... In simple but concrete language , the author gently invites her readers to explore the longings of the heart as a way to open into the process of transformation, graciously introducing us to the ways we create space for that process to unfold. In simple terms, Barton makes the subject of spiritual transformation inviting and introduces ways into it through various spiritual practices/disciplines.This a beautifully written book that I will delight in gifting to others who are awakening to the longings of their own hearts. A book I am happy to recommend!

I bought this for a Bible study I was invited to attend. I’ll admit that the title turned me off. I don’t like anything that tries to regulate my spirituality in anyway, especially this point in my life when I have young children. However, upon reading it, it’s anything but a regulator. It’s more of an open invitation. Going through a dry spiritual time has been very frustrating, bordering on depressing really. But this book has helped open that door again to let God in again, in the deep intimate places where I need Him most. It’s like I’m FINALLY getting real with Him, and I’ve been a Christian all of my life. So grateful for this book and the beautiful souls who introduced me to it.

I had to use this book along with others in a spiritual disciplines course at Trevecca Nazarene University. The book has some helpful tips on honing your disciplines. It's an easy read and not very lengthy, it can be completed in a day or two, but to get the most out of it, you'll want to take it slow and practice the various disciplines in your life.

A seminary friend invited me to participate in an 8-week book study and this was the book. Wow - I have to say it really came at an interesting time in my life where I was highly involved in our church but thinking that those activities were a substitute for my own personal study and reflection. The book and the group discussion literally changed how I framed my church involvement as well as my need for spiritual nourishment through solitude, prayer and study. This is a wonderful book for any Christian looking to disconnect from the "shoulds" of the Christian journey and really deepen their spiritual intimacy. I think it applies to most of us in the modern church.Arrived quickly from Amazon, as always.

Well-written introduction to a variety of spiritual disciplines written in a very practical, down-to-earth way. A good survey of some of the possibilities "out there" and how they might be useful to the person desiring a deeper spiritual life.

One of the most helpful books I've read on spiritual disciplines, right up there with Richard Foster's Celebration of Discipline. Very practical, great for those of us who struggle with these kinds of practices.
