I love this book. It contains 37 of the most amazing true stories from the RISK! podcast, which is also one of my favorite podcasts, plus Q and A's with every storyteller, and an introduction and afterword from the podcast's host, Kevin Allison. This book is perfect for people who love to hear daring true stories that illuminate all aspects of the human condition, with nothing held back. It will make you more empathetic and understanding and feel less alone. It will also blow you away with how crazy some people's lives are, and give you plenty of great laughs and tears.Now, full disclosure, I helped make this book because I'm also the producer of the RISK! podcast and I have a true story of my own in the book, but that's how I know it's awesome! I read it multiple times as we were compiling and editing it, and every time, it still moved me, made me laugh and cry, and made me shake my head and drop my jaw. And I can tell you that we did everything we could to make sure there were as few spelling and grammatical errors in the final version as possible, because I'm a real stickler for that stuff. ;)I love that this book contains true stories from such a wide array of people. Sure, there are stories from celebrities like Dan Savage, Michael Ian Black, Aisha Tyler, and more, but there are also stories from trans men and women, people of all races and ethnicities and ages and sexualities, parents, travelers, artists, detectives, cops, etc etc etc. In all the stories, there's a strong sense of resilience, humanity and vulnerability. The storytellers let you into the most intimate parts of their lives and show over and over again that whatever we go through, we can get through it and come out of it stronger.There are so many reasons to read this book and share it with others. I hope you love it as much as I do!

I really enjoy this podcast, so I was excited to order this book when it was announced. I think there was a fairly nice range and selection of stories curated from the podcast, which has been around for many years and had many great episodes. It's a good way for a long-time fan to revisit some of the most popular stories that were shared, and also a fine introduction to the podcast for new readers. My favorite stories were Michelle Carlo's "The GIft", "Dressing the Wound" by Jim Padar, "The Power" by Tori, Mollena Williams-Haas' "Slave", and Moloch Masters' "In the Shadows" (which coincidentally were some of the most intense and viscerally told stories).My main criticism is that some of the stories by more famous people (i.e. Marc Maron) aren't as exciting or interesting as the ones by lesser-known authors. I understand that certain names are a draw to have on the cover, but I would rather that the stories stand on their own. There were a few great ones from Risk! podcast that I was surprised didn't end up included.

I think that a lot of us, myself included, run from the idea of true authenticity. Reading these breathtakingly honest and raw stories is a fantastic antidote to that fear of being really truly real. This is a collection that celebrates grit and the glorious mess of life...you should absolutely give it a shot!

I am so excited to have received this book! I am a huge fan of the podcast, and will finally get to see my first live show. Thank you to the people that work so hard to make this show a reality. You have given an uncensored voice to human experience. The book is incredible, I love reading stories I heard on the show, and reading new stories. The Q&A interviews are icing on the cake.

The stories in this collection are about violence, deception, callousness, betrayal, and the human spirit which struggles withthem. It's a literary description of the enduring human condition forever seeking healing. We readers are all part of the process. We're the confidant to whom the secret can be told. We're the friend, the solution to all the residual terror who brings the feeling of safety and restores trust again. Read the book and you will be on the line where good and evil confront each other - where despair and hope duke it out. You will be exploring your own capacity to experience compassion and empathy. I found I could not read more than a couple of stories at a time. I opened the book randomly and read whatever I turned to. I saw the human soul being crushed, rising above, enduring, and reaching out to the world for love - yours and mine - as if our experience which the author will never know, will nevertheless cause the authors to feel inner peace again. I especially liked the story by Melanie Hamlett - her writing was especially good and I couldn't put it down until it ended. But there are many others which are also wonderful and will awaken in you an awareness of how many of us have been emotionally devastated who will recover b/c we were there to support them.
