Dick is far more concerned with lyrical prose than with providing any useful information. He is remarkably successful with the prose -- I'm sure he writes great fiction. But this book takes multiple paragraphs to convey such tautological gems as "you can open a brewery in the city or in the country", yet omits any useful details such as the risks of trademark conflicts, or production schedules appropriate to different mixes of brewing vessels, fermenters, and bright tanks. He waxes poetic -- in German, no less -- about tile floors, but if you're looking for details on the relative merits of tile compared to various treatments of concrete, you will be disappointed. But you will enjoy reading the two pages he takes to tell you that those are the options available to you.Two stars because the table of contents provides a nice list of things you should think about if you are founding a brewery. There's no need to read further unless you are tired of your poetry anthologies.

If you know how to use Google, this book isn't worth much. Lots of anecdotes and stories which are fine, but if you want any detail or real guidance look to the Internet. The entire chapter on finding a property could be summed up as make sure you have room to grow, hopefully; the rest is fluff (all 4 useless pages). Wanted something that gave more detail about starting a brewery, but for the most part it's just a vague account of what it took to start a brewery in the 1980s. Good read, but don't expect it to answer (or even help ask) tough questions. This book reads like someone trying to fill the word limit on a paper. Very disappointed. Better info on probrewer forums.

Hard to be too critical of a book providing guidance on such a cool business. Most, not all of what I read was not earth shattering having owned and run several businesses in my life. I was hoping for more detailed guidance around financial and operating ratios that could help me in developing realistic proformas for starting or evaluating the purchase of a brewery..

Insane book for someone looking to start a brewery. Expensive, and worth it. There is a ton on the internet about brewing, but there is very little about actually taking it to the next step.

I am trying to start a brewery and this book is my guide. I'm only 6 chapters in and it has already changed my mind on several concepts i was set on doing. It really is extremely helpful and very informative! This book is full of information I've been scouring the internet for and just cant seem to find.

I'm not sure that "Guide" is the correct description for this book. It reads more like a narrative of the author's experiences, experiences of others in the industry, and history of the craft brewing industry. A very enjoyable read, but far from detailed enough or specific enough to be a primary reference for opening a brewery. It is, however, full of practical advice which the author shares from his personal experiences and/or examples from other breweries.

I bought both start your own and run your own corporation. Both good books. My only complaint is the lack of even one condensed list of specific corporate formalities. Such as #1, file articles with state, #2, write bylaws, etc.

Contains a ton of great nuggets and provides enough of the differences and pros and cons of each type of entity used for protecting personal assets and limiting personal liability. Unless you are a legal entity expert, chances are high this book will prove to be a tremendous asset.

Started my own company after reading this book. I still hired an attorney. I can understand what he says and he feels that I did my homework.

I’ve highlighted and bookmarked so much in this book. The examples all make sense and Are practical. I even learned how to adjust my own situation for a better corporate strategy. This is GOLD! Well done!

Excellent book. Very insightful and full of practical information. It reads like a conversation and it easy to follow. I really enjoyed it and recommend this to any one start a business.

This book gives many great real life scenarios of corporation formations. Which includes The Good The Bad and The Ugly. My one very small wish was that it wasn't so Nevada Corp. formation one sided. The book goes over why it prefers Nevada over other States like Delaware but just wish it had more in-depth with other popular states also. Really enjoy the series an authors.

I liked this book. (or recording, in this case) I especially appreciated a side by side comparison of C corps, S corps, and LLCs, which I couldn't find anywhere else! For that, I thank Garrett Sutton for providing in this book. Nearly half of the book was about assett protection through corporations, which was a bit annoying to me personally, because I'm trying to start a business and I have no assetts yet! But good information nonetheless.

About the Author

Elliot D. Abravanel, M.D., is known as a founder of holistic medicine. He received his B.A. from the University of California, Berkeley, and his M.D. from the University of Cincinnati in 1969. For many years he served Maharishi Mahesh Yogi as head of medical staff and as Professor of Medicine at Maharishi European Research University, where he pursued reseearch on the relationship between consciousness and ideal health. In 1975 he opened a private medical practice in Beverly Hills, California, where he developed the Body Type System. He is the author of three books: Dr. Abravanel's Body Type Diet and Lifetime Nutrition Plan, Dr. Abravanel's Body Type Program for Health, Fitness and Nutrition, and Dr. Abravanel's Anti-Craving Weight Loss Diet, as well as numerous medical publications. He now divides his time between writing, lecturing, and research. He lives in Los Angeles with his wife, Weiyi Xu.Elizabeth King Morrison is a writer and educator who specializes in the creation of individual health and nutrition programs. AMAZING....30 YEARS AFTER LOSING 50 POUNDS ON THIS DIET I HAVE MAINTAINED MY GOAL WEIGHT WITHIN 10 POUNDSMy heading says it all. I went on this diet at least 30 years ago when a condensed version was published in Cosmopolitan Magazine. My brother and his wife had invited me to go the beach with them but told me we all had to diet for the week that we were there. They went on a diet where you purchased the meals and I went on this diet because I had just received the magazine and I didn't want to spend money on replacement meals. I was shocked at the end of the week that I wasn't craving my old foods. I never looked back. I went from 180 pounds to 130 pounds. I was in my 30's at the time and had always been overweight and had tried many diets. I have basically followed the principals of the plan and I weight 140 pounds. This diet changed my life. I am the G Type and one of the first things I did was stop eating breakfast because as the book said, it made me hungry all day to eat breakfast. Get the book, take the quiz and follow your plan!

I really like this book. I know there are lots of people who say it is quackery, but that's okay by me. Whether or not you know what body type you are, it may or may not matter, but what I found it got me back to losing weight. I know, just eat 1200 calories and you'll lose. Well, that is not true. I don't like it when people say that. One diet or plan doesn't fit all. There are people out there who struggle with weight loss, it doesn't come off easy. I never had a weight problem till menopause. I tried all kinds of weight loss. Cutting out sugar, processed foods, etc. and they all worked okay for a while. I was gestational diabetic and carry the gene. I knew I had to do something. I tried Paleo, lost a few pounds, but really caused my gallbladder act up something terrrible, plus constipation so bad, no amount of prunes or laxatives worked. My BP was going up gradually, so I tried the DASH plan. Felt pretty good on it, lost 9 lbs and stopped. Had some hypoglycemia from it. Although my BP dropped some in just a few days. Was pleased with that. Then, followed the 1200 cal diabetic plan. Couldn't lose any, fluctuated back and forth with 1/2 pound. Very frustrating. Then I found this book, 4 different body types and 1200 cal plan for each one. I seemed to be T-type by a bit over the A-type. I liked the T-type plan better and decided to go with it. It has a higher protein then the others. It has worked. I am losing again. Most likely I was eating too much fruit and grains, even though we need them, to lose, I must have needed to reduce them some, even though I was keeping the carb count around 30 a meal. I am so pleased and I feel really good.I know he says keep the hours in between like clockwork. I don't. No snacking. I do, but only at bedtime, I have to or I wouldn't be able to sleep. I will wake up at 4am with my tummy wanting food. I ignore it and eventually go back to sleep. I can fast till about 11am.He says, if you crave it don't eat it. Don't know if I buy that one or not. I try and listen to my body. Vegetarian, very bad for me. I digest food so fast, no bean, greens, tofu stays with me for long, then I start to get shaky.I love eggs, I have my own chickens, I love fish and other meats. I love my sprouted ww bread. I love my raw milk. I get all that with this plan, and am losing weight. These foods are very satisfying to me and stay with me a long time. I can get hungry and don't get shaky or weak, so if I can't eat right away, I am okay.I am sure there is a plan for you in this book. It is well worth taking a look at it and giving it a try. If the body type plan for you doesn't work, try one that looks like if would fit you and give it a whirl. They are all geared around 1200 calories.I just may help those that are stuck on their weight.There is also an exercise plan to go along with it if you can do it, that seems logical. I don't do it, I walk, do some squats, and stretch mostly.However, if you find yourself obsessively craving foods, then you probably shouldn't eat that type. I need protein, but don't obsess over it. I do crave bread a bit, but a little satisfies me.I no longer have gallbladder or heartburn issues(on the most part, very rare now), feel good, have a bit more clarity and stamina, and am losing weight.So, don's listen to those that so rudely say, any diet will work if you eat less calories then you take it. They don't know. Everyone is different. You may have a medical condition. You should have that looked at.But I can easily stay on this way of eating for life, with a few adjustments. Just don't be so strict where you would be bound to fail. Adjust it according to your body.

I've tried "The Fit for Life" Diet (food combining), the "Eat Right for Your Type" Diet (based on blood type), and the no-grain diet. None of these has worked the way Dr. Abravanel's body-type diet works! By means of an easy "quiz" offered in this book, I was able easily to determine my body type. The section on my body type was a real eye opener! It discussed exactly my craving for salty, greasy snacks like potato chips, and other symptoms of my depleted but over-stimulated adrenals.Because of previous adverse reactions to milk products and wheat, I was avoiding these. As it turns out, I needed these, balanced with other nutrients, actually to lose weight. I now have no adverse reactions to these products. And, because I believed I shouldn't eat fruit with meals, I was rarely eating fruit. Now I eat much more, and really am enjoying the fresh produce of my regional area.The first week I noticed my waistline coming back! Instead of losing weight all over, including my face, (Yesterday I bought 4 size-small belts, which size I haven't worn in almost 20 years. I just turned 65,) Although I lost the jowls below my jaws, the previous recessed tissue under my eyes filled in and my skin looks wonderful, and full in a youthful way! Thank you, Dr. Abravanel!

I have always believed the notion of fat makes humans fat to be a fallacy because I've come to the conclusion that carbs, especially simple carbs contributes to weight gain. I have done a lot of research on this, for example, reading books like good calories, bad calories and many other anti carbohydrate books. In short, I have gone on low carb diets, and had little to no weight loss on them. I am the type of person who does not give up easy and did some research and came across this book and discovered some fascinating things; I am body type A, which according to the book; fat intake makes me fat and I am better off on a higher carb, moderate protein, low fat diet. So 3 weeks ago (1/21/2014) I put it to the test: so far things are going great; I have lost 15 pounds and have about 30 more to go. I know using yourself as an example is anecdotal, however, the book is worth a try if you have tried other diet plans and have experienced little to no success.

It's hard to get to know the narrator in this story. I'm still not sure if it is Death, Violence, or the Gun speaking. There is some very poetic sections but I had some trouble with chapter transitions. Dealt with many current issues and makes you a bit nervous wondering who will be killed. Spoiler alert....it's not what you expect. Really makes you think.

If you marveled at the intricacies of plot and depth of characterization in the film “Crash,” you will find yourself immersed in this complex, memorable story, narrated by the gun whose power comes from the many hands into which it falls—hands that unwittingly touch each other’s lives and alter them. Hopkins has created one of her most powerful, indelible novels yet! It will impact readers’ lives just as its narrator does on its fateful journey. I recommend People Kill People for teens and adults alike as a natural book for group discussions. What a film this would be, too!

If you haven’t read a book from Ellen Hopkins... just go do it. She writes over controversial topics during that time. Gun control and boarded security is what People Kill people is about. While I wasn’t sure I’d like it due to the political point of views on some parts I remained open minded. I very much reading this one!

I love all of her books. This one does not disappoint either. Great read on a controversial topic.

another powerful book by Hopkins. we are introduced to several young people and their need for a gun. the story is shown through the eyes of the characters. each story is heart breaking and how the fate of 1 life effects all.

I am a huge fan of her books. This one, however is my least favorite. Not because of the message, but because of the rushed feel. I feel like some parts were rushed and over exaggerated to get a point across. Some parts just didn’t seem to fit and had an unrealistic feel. I never really felt that climax that seemed to be built up. I was really excited to read it. At the end, I felt a huge disappointment.

This book was definitely up in the air for me the darkness of the topic and the political opinions behind gave me a hard look at life that I never had the need to think about. It’s true people kill people for something small or something extreme but for whatever the reason it’s never a good one.

About the Author

Pete Hamill is a novelist, essayist and journalist whose career has endured for more than forty years. He was born in Brooklyn, N. Y. in 1935, the oldest of seven children of immigrants from Belfast, Northern Ireland. He attended Catholic schools as a child. He left school at 16 to work in the Brooklyn Navy Yard as a sheetmetal worker, and then went on to the United States Navy. While serving in the Navy, he completed his high school education. Then, using the educational benefits of the G.I. Bill of Rights, he attended Mexico City College in 1956-1957, studying painting and writing, and later went to Pratt Institute. For several years, he worked as a graphic designer. Then in 1960, he went to work as a reporter for the New York Post. A long career in journalism followed. He has been a columnist for the New York Post, the New York Daily News, and New York Newsday, the Village Voice, New York magazine and Esquire. He has served as editor-in-chief of both the Post and the Daily News.. As a journalist, he has covered wars in Vietnam, Nicaragua, Lebanon and Northern Ireland, and has lived for extended periods in Mexico City, Dublin, Barcelona, San Juan and Rome. From his base in New York he has also covered murders, fires, World Series, championship fights and the great domestic disturbances of the 1960s, and has written extensively on art, jazz, immigration and politics. He witnessed the events of September 11, 2001 and its aftermath and wrote about them for the Daily News. At the same time, Hamill has written much fiction, including movie and TV scripts. He has published nine novels and two collections of short stories. His 1997 novel, Snow in August, was on the New York Times bestseller list for four months. His memoir, A Drinking Life, was on the same New York Times list for 13 weeks. He has published two collections of his journalism (Irrational Ravings and Piecework), an extended essay on journalism called News Is A Verb, a book about the relationship of tools to art, a biographical essay called Why Sinatra Matters, dealing with the music of the late singer and the social forces that made his work unique. In 1999, Harry N. Abrams published his acclaimed book on the Mexican painter Diego Rivera. His latest novel, Forever, was published by Little, Brown in January 2003 and became a New York Times bestseller. In 2004, he published “Downtown: My Manhattan”, a non-fiction account of his love affair with New York and received much critical acclaim. Hamill is the father of two daughters, and has a seven-year-old grandson. He is married to the Japanese journalist, Fukiko Aoki, and they divide their time between New York City and Cuernavaca, Mexico. Love this book! Pete Hammil's descriptions of Irish life in Brooklyn during WWII, post-war and the 50s, and Greenwich Village in the 60s is spot on, reflecting my own parents' upbringing and memorable visits to my aunts and uncles during those years. Hammill was a very admired columnist and role model for aspiring journalists in NYC in the late seventies and eighties, and this honest portrayal of the man behind the image is a true delight.

This is a story about a very textured life, lived fully and successfully, with a persistent and painful subtext of alcohol. I am in awe of people who achieve much in life in spite of drinking quantities of alcohol that would have disabled me completely - Pete Hamill is one of these people. As Hamill states in the book, after he finally quit drinking, he never wanted to moralize or preach about his decision to quit drinking. This attitude is informs the book, which is more a story of his life & times and his improbable path to writing that almost parenthetically happens to include a lot of drinking. One of the book's contributions to the literature of alcohol addiction is Hamill's depiction of the way in which drinking was so densely woven into the world in which he grew up. Finally, Hamill did the unthinkable and broke free.

I am a recovering alcoholic with ten years of sobriety, who loves to read, entering the minds and lives of kindred spirits. Pete Hamill is definitely a kindred spirit. We are close in age and experiences, so I loved all of the cultural and historical references. I would so enjoy a long chat with him!

I guess I had heard of Pete Hamill when "NYC old timers" were referenced. However, it was when reading "A Drinking Life" by Caroline Knapp did I feel compelled to seek out this book. I understand other reviwers' disappointment that Hamill's memoir wasn't at all like Caroline Knapp's hard-core and raw experience with alcohol addicition. To be fair, Hamill's letter in the very beginning of the book primes you for his life story and the eventual discovery that his drinking had been riding side-saddle with him for as long as he could remember. It sure helped me understand how drinking can cloak itself in merriment and celebration, but that its long-term effects can (and will) erode and destroy pretty much everything in its path. And it helps shed light on why, culturally, we equate the Irish with big-time drinking. I also appreciated the history lesson you receive through the eyes of a young boy. It was easy to visualize Hamill's world with his intimate descriptions of the places he lived and the characters who helped shape his life.Because of Hamill's ambitious undertaking with this memoir, I felt the book was uneven at times. In my mind, more minor anecdotes received a larger spotlight with more detail, while more critical turning points in his life faded out as a sub-chapter was coming to a close.Overall, I enjoyed the book and would recommend it. Not only is Pete Hamill a living NYC legend, he has lived a legendary life that is worth taking in.

Oh, the places Hamill will take you in this gritty, unflinchingly honest look at a fascinating interior life. Growing up in a poor neighborhood in Brooklyn, complete with cockroaches, Pete slowly acquires an understanding of what it means to be an Irish-American. Around age 8, his father, Billy, walked him to Gallagher's, the corner saloon, where young Pete got his first introduction to the camaraderie of the neighborhood bar. There he witnessed his father's serenading of the crowd, after loosening himself up with booze. It was an initiation that would influence Pete for many years to come. Throughout the book, Hamill notes the persistent, persuasive messages that our society gives, that drinking is an essential social lubricant. Be it a wedding, a funeral, the beginning of a job, or ending of one, joining the Navy, going on leave or vacation, on and on, drinking was invited, expected, nearly demanded. The book provides great insights into the times. Hamill writes, "We lived to the rhythms of the war (WWII). Before the War, During the War, After the War." Hamill's forays into the world of art are enlightening. While taking a drawing class, he becomes enamored of a nude model, and they become involved. His loves, travels, thoughts on religion and family kept me entranced, as well as his inevitable slide into an alcohol-induced moral deterioration. The surprising aspect here, was Hamill's moment of clarity, when he realized he had a choice, that he could disrupt the cycle of the "Irish-curse". We cheer for him as he strives to make a sober life for himself. An interesting life, told by a great writer.

A Drinking Life is really an autobiographical memoir. Hamill is the son of an Irish immigrant and finds that the culture of drink is part of the culture of being a man. However, he also watched his father, who was a fall down alcoholic through his life growing up, and thus recalled the pain it imposed on his family's life.In the course of telling his story, Hamill reveals that he was a person who was constantly going from place to place, all over the world. What exactly he is searching for, he never really reveals. But eventually, he does come to grips with the fact that the Drinking Life is detrimental to his continued existence.One of his greatest lines in the entire book is in his introduction when he states, "But life doesn't get easier when you walk away from the culture of drink; you simply live it with greater lucidity." The book is a fine example of someone who eventually realizes that life is "better" if not easier, without his addiction. The book is an inspiring story and I recommend it to all observers of social behavior.
