In a nutshell, buy this prep book if your goal is a very detailed review of content. If you have actually read your spine text, mastered all its terms, and done well on course quizzes and midterms, then you could likely purchase a skinnier volume than Barron's and do fine. This is too much for a weekend of review, but IS well suited for use over several weeks, a semester, or a year. What Barron's does well -- better than REA and MyMaxScore -- is to provide a comprehensive but focused review. I like the short review questions at the end of each section. Each of these three prep books for US GOPO has fairly poor "model" or practice exams; it's hard to say which is worst on that score. For this reason, I don't advise spending more for the Barron's edition that contains more model exams.While I would purchase this book again, it's rather like the whole-wheat toast shown next to the sugar-laden cereal in those old TV advertisements. Useful, but most definitely not enough on its own. Remember "part of this healthy breakfast?" You'll want the fresh fruit and milk to really do the job.To score a "five" on this exam, do these six things. (1) Actually read (gasp!) your spine textbook and master all of its terms. I recommend creating your own notecards by hand, preferably paper. Make your brain and fingers do the work so you "own" those definitions and can then apply them. (Buying ready-made notecards or flipping through other people's work on a screen will not weave the neural connections you want. It's got to be YOU.) Set aside a few minutes each week to review notecards cumulatively. No review means you've merely marked up a pack of cards. If you need to skimp on any textbook area, make that historical detail. Some GOPO books begin with and dwell lovingly on colonial history, but you need to focus on constitutional underpinnings in that section: Articles of Confederation versus the Constitution, impact of Shays' Rebellion, the Federalist Papers, core political values, and contents of the Constitution. (2) Follow news on Congress, the presidency, and the Supreme Court; and pay attention to their interactions with each other. Note how each branch attempts to limit the others and how it interacts with the bureaucracy and linking institutions such as parties and media. (3) If possible, make good use of actual College Board released exams, available from your AP instructor, so you truly understand the types of questions asked on the exam. The model exams in Barron's do have some value in your review, but like those in other prep books, are a poor reflection of the actual exam. (4) Practice writing answers to released essays with a pen, on lined paper, in the time limits given. If you write very little and have lots of time left over, you are likely not fulfilling the prompts. "Explain" means to tell HOW! (5) Memorize a core list of Supreme Court cases, because this will help you master several areas of the course -- not just the judiciary. Understand how cases relate to incorporation, different judicial philosophies, and linkage institutions. (6) Do use a review book like Barron's (or a competitor) for somewhat different coverage of what you know already; but be sure to read College Board's own "Course Description" document for the final word. Most prep books I've seen have some mistakes regarding the exam.

Great at making the topics simple and easy to understand. Highlights all of the important information you need to know. Clear and concise. Practice exams at the end are helpful and provide great explanations of why the correct answer is correct. I recommend reading a chapter a day for roughly a month before the exam and highlighting the important information as well as taking the mini quizzes at the end of the chapter. Doing so got me a 5 on the exam. Great review book, Barron's in general, has good review books for all of the AP exams. Highly recommend. Good Luck!

My 10th grader is currently study for the AP test to be held in two weeks. There are certain areas that he needs to focus on and this book allows him to target his studying. Each section has a summary of the topic and then review questions with explanations of the answers at the end of the chapter. He was immediately engaged by the book. The mock exams at the back of the book as well as the online tools make this a very valuable study too. Well done.

A couple of years ago, I upgraded a few custom build steps from the old VS format to the new one. This had to be one of the most frustrating experience I've ever went through as a programmer!!Learning how to use the old custom build steps had taken me a single evening, allowing me to create tons of custom properties with everything working flawlessly. The automatic conversion to the new format generated by VS was FAR from being perfect, which forced me to dig into these completely new files and language, which was MSBUILD. With virtually no MSDN documentation on it (even to this day!!), I literally spent months (evening project) trying to get things to work just how I wanted. In the end, I just had to settle for "good enough", as I was losing my sanity.I recently came across this book through some comments on Stackeoverflow. Wow! In a single day, I've learned more on the whole topic than I did in months of frustration using the meaningless one-liners on MSDN.I highly recommend this book. It does a great job a gradually introducing you to the various components of MSBUILD, always demonstrated with easy-to-understand exemples.Avoid the frustration... it's probably the most beneficial programing book one ever purchased.I had originally given this a 5 stars, before I was completely done with it. I had learned so much in do little time, that I was confident about giving it the 5 stars. However, I just reached part 2 of the Visual Studio 2010 section and it is noticeably less well written. Clearly, this was written by somebody else. It also starts off as if we didn't know how properties worked, at that point in the book! The vocabulary is also different, which complicates things. The author of the first half should review and edit these other sections and bring them up to par with the rest of the book.

First off, this is a fantastic book. I used the 1st edition with TFS 2008. This new edition includes great content for the new, completely revamped, build workflow process in TFS 2010.However, as a new Kindle user, when I went to purchase the second edition, I ended up with the wrong one. After returning it via the Amazon Kindle return process (which is pretty painless), I was able to get the correct version. I wish Amazon had a better way of classifying/naming their book versions. They should call the Kindle versions "Version 1" and Version 2" to coincide with the book versions. Instead, there is the regular Kindle version (which is the new one!) and the Kindle "November 11, 2009" edition. Hover your mouse cursor over the Kindle links to see which picture appears. If you want the newer edition, be sure to click on the Kindle link with a "2" appearing in the picture of the cover.As with any IT books for the Kindle, watch for missing content. I've been seeing this problem with a lot of IT books from Amazon. Maybe we need to create a web site called MissingKindleContent.com or a way (unknown to me!) to report Kindle errors to Amazon so they can fix it.So far, no problems with this book. Big thumbs up!

There is a baffling lack of MSBuild documentation on MSDN and there are not enough examples and tutorials in blogs to fill in MSDN's vast documentation gap. Buy this book if you need to learn the basics and inner workings of:+ How and when projects and imports are parsed and processed+ How and when properties and items are evaluated+ How target and task batching work+ How to chain targets together+ How to create incremental builds+ How to integrate other tools into MSBuild+ How to write your own custom tasks when MSBuild lacks the expressive power.This book leaves nothing unexplained. If you have any MSBuild questions at all, this book will answer them.

After reading the first couple of chapters of this book, I was astonished that nearly 40 years into the computer revolution such poorly-executed computer books were still being published.This is one of those books that assumes such a high level of existing knowledge on the part of the reader that you wonder why the intended reader would need the book in the first place. It's kind of like those O'Reilly "In A Nutshell" books, which are anything but. If you happen to like those books, maybe this one will work for you.And early on it detours into a pointless explanation of XML. If the reader has the level of MSBuild knowledge the rest of the book assumes, they already know how XML works.I bought this to help with issues creating SQL builds, but the joke was on me. Apparently, SQL doesn't even exist as far as this author is concerned. I can't find a single mention of it.From my perspective, this book is utterly useless.

Paul N. Friga worked for McKinsey & Co. in the Pittsburgh office after receiving his MBA from the Kenan-Flagler Business School at the University of North Carolina. He has conducted consulting projects relating to international expansion, acquisition and strategic planning, education, water, and other industries. He has also consulted for Price Waterhouse. He is currently pursuing his Ph.D. in Strategy at Kenan-Flagler and is Acting Director of the North Carolina Knowledge Management Center.

This is a good business book. If you are completely new to consulting, or making data-driven decisions much like a consultant, this is a good book to get a general idea of how to structure thoughts and communicate clearly. The book is broken down into three sections: analyzing problems, managing (client, team, self), and presenting.Section one, on analyzing problems, does not lead you through a business case or prepare you to interview with a firm, which is seemingly what many expected, based on customer reviews. It does provide, at a high level, concepts to explore further: being hypothesis-driven, working with issue trees, synthesizing.Section two, presenting, is the section I got the most out of. This section provides a clear way to get your message across. I had heard most of it before ("Tell them what you are going to tell them. Tell them. Tell them what you told them.") but the ideas for creating single charts in PowerPoint presentations and avoiding reading from outlines on the screen made me reminisce of countless crappy presentations in class.The book ends with tips on managing the client, team, and self. The client information had some insights (they are future business). So much has been written on managing teams and self but Rasiel and Friga do explain its relevance in the book and keep it brief.Again, good business book. A fifth star would have been given for providing follow up reading or tips on developing the skills and techniques that are only touched on.

This book is not as insightful as how the title makes it out to be. It misses the fundamental point is that the reason Mckinsey is so successful is because it knows the subject matter cold. Or at least it knows it from one client in the industry to apply it to another.Its great to have the frameworks and ideas discussed in the book from a theoretical standpoint but the authors really need to acknowledge the whole subject matter concept. Not everybody reading this book will have the benefit of an org with a 120 year legacy (and knowledge practices on how to acquire subject matter expertise).The book should have recognized that from the outset, and at least made an attempt on how to go about (in a simpler way) the process by which the reader should acquire it.

If you know consulting... not for you. If you know McKinsey..maybe self congratulatory remembrances?? If you are looking to penetrate deeper into your craft (consulting)... AVOID. This is a continuation in a series of commercials for the”firm”.

Ok, everyone wants to know how McKinsey does it. Works with leading companies, drives corporate strategy, has great influence and often wind up CEOs in their own right.Unfortunatley this book does not deliver in any depth in my opinion. It is more of a casual conversation about McKinsey, how great it is with breif discussions of how they work.Notions such as 'always involve your client' and 'recognize that you may not always have great data' are obvious and not worth the price of the book -- even if you purchased it used -- which I did.If you really want to know how the McKinsey mind works I heartly recommend K. Ohmae's "The mind of the strategist" Ohmae was Mr. Strategy at McKinsey and his book really shows you what's in the mind of this influencial company and its consultants.The two who authored this book, are really trading on McKinsey's name, brand and reputation. Its a shame and do not be lured in by the title, read Ohmae's book.

Truly an excellent book to read about McKinsey that helps you appreciate the first and many of their best practices. Any management consultant would benefit from this read.

Is this a 5 star book or a 2.5 star book?Well, it depends which of these 2 questions are you trying to answer:1) Are you trying to find out the consulting methodology that the Firm uses in order to solve problems and have their clients come back for more?2) Are you trying to find out what analytically consulting tools does the Firm uses?If you have selected number 1, then you will love (5 star) this book, because it is a window into the McKinsey world and it primarily focuses on the consulting methodology used by the Firm, but at a high level. (It also touches upon a few problem solving tools like the Issue Tree, Quick and Dirty Test, Hypothesis and Decision/Logic tree, but at a superficial level.)If you have selected number 2, then you will be disappointed, since the authors show only a few tools and, even then, they only go into it at a high level; therefore, you might be inclined to rate this book poorly.

This is deception. The book is useless. Buyers, take it from me, buy Case in Point and save yourself the waste. They used the "McKinsey".

Interesting, and occasionally inspiring. However, I wish we could get a deeper version with more examples and/or cases. I’d recommend it as an inspirational tool.

If you want absolute simplicity - the bare bones "must see" sights for a short visit then this is a handy book but you'll need to go elsewhere (your smart phone?) for maps. However it doesn't really do justice to what you are going to experience. For your traveler's vocabulary you really need an audio source - online.

Fairly basic guide - look for something a bit more substantial

These e-books are informative travel guides that help you learn things like where to eat and what the best sights to see are. Some of the phrases might need a little practice, but it's a step in the right direction if I ever decided to visit Beijing. There is a guide to follow that tells you good places to eat, visit and get the most fun out of your trip. I loved seeing the photos included, makes me want to go visit. This review is written based on my unbiased opinion.

I love reading bits from this interesting book - it reminds me of my days in Beijing. The irony is that my knowledge of Beijing is less than half of what this book covers. Well, I guess I have been absent for too long. I think I am gonna use this book for my next long over-due trip to Beijing to rediscover the charm of this ancient yet modern city.

This could have been as good a guide for beginners as many reviews here claim it to be, but it suffers from one fatal flaw: there are no maps to guide you with any precision. There is only one map that basically amounts to pointing out east, west, north, and south parts of the city. However, there is no map to locate the neighborhoods recommended for shopping or staying or sight seeing. In other words, while this guide can be a useful reminder to those already familiar with Beijing, it is considerably less useful to those unfamiliar with the city.

No real information about Beijing beyond the most generic travel advice. Does not have any specifics about sites or history, really not one thing. I read the entire "book" in under 15 minutes.

Good info about touristics atractions. But needs more recomendarions of places to eat, shows to see, places stay and recomendations of how getting to the points of interes.I guess that Fodors would worlk better this time for me....I

Historical fiction bursting forth from the fertile fields of North Kerry in Ireland across the huge and inhospitable North Atlantic ocean, to the sunny and equally fertile island of Jamaica and back again over a century and a half later.This is a big book, well researched and well written in a very easy but gripping style by a young Irish writer. The family dynamic running through the story makes for addictive reading. The highs and lows of indentured servants and slaves moulded by the unremitting sun, human passion and violent beatings.Sun, lots of sun, sweat and sugar in all it's forms.It opens a historical pouch that has been mostly untold. An Irish slave? Who would have thought it. And thousands of Irish slaves? Well, Cromwell himself, to legitimize the havoc he caused in Ireland, used the old religious chestnut to substantiate the genocide and redistribute the overpopulated, awkward and slovenly peasantsFrom Ireland to Jamaica ............ out of the frying pan and into the fire.My only moan, and that is a feeble one, is a missing epilogue reference page - to save the reader going back to see the relationships of strange sounding names.If she brings out another tome, I'm going for it.

Was pleasantly surprised by the author's careful treatment of the sensitive topic of slavery. Very well done. I enjoyed this book immensely. Fast read, hard to put down, fantastic prose; it's obvious she spent a great deal of time researching Jamaican history. I will definitely recommend to friends.

Full of passion, pain and reality. Historical novels like this one need to be believable and ring true to the times and locations. The Tide between us delivers both, plus the chracters are staunchly three dimensional. An entertaining and satisfying read for both history buffs as well as those intrigued by human nature.

Bought two copies as gift. One from Amazon UK for Ireland and one from Amazon US for Jamaica. The last sentence on every page was missing in both books!I read the book on kindle and enjoyed it, so this was disappointing.

The first half of the book was great. The second half kind of dragged. As a person of Caribbean descent I could relate to some aspects of the story. Would definitely recommend

I voluntarily reviewed this ARC is courtesy of Poolberg Press and Library Thing. The story is of two eras, both revolving around the Irish people (many were children, as is the case in how the novel begins); in this book the English landowner on Lugdale Estate in the mid 1800s is looking for an excuse to punish the Irish. Art O’Neill witnesses his father’s hanging and then, along with a number of other boys, is put on a ship bound for an unknown destination. Before the landowner leaves for his new home, however, he is cursed: “May you and your heirs die by the hand of your own offspring.” They land in Jamaica as indentured servants on a sugar cane plantation. Being white, Art is a step higher on the ladder than the black African slaves, but he lives with them and considers them his friends. He catches the eye of an old freed slave and is made part of the garden work crew which gains him access to the goings-on of the English family, allowing the author to provide us information from several points of view. The novel pauses at times to detail Art’s experiences with the white family, his slave friends, and his evolving hate for the English who sent him away from his beloved Ireland. Art’s hate becomes his focus when the old master dies and his heir comes to take over; Art recognizes Blair Stratford-Rice, who had his father hung, and begins plotting how he might seek revenge. The novel picks up its pace and Art grows into manhood, fathering several children along the way with black slaves with whom he fell in love. His first daughter, Addy, is the light of his life. She is lost to him early when her mother is killed after multiple runaway attempts, but Art works to find her and eventually she returns to the plantation. In later chapters she grows to childbearing age and bears Blair’s son. Blair needed an heir, and so the boy lives in the big house. That is, until Blair takes a wife who finally conceives a boy. This becomes the key event of the novel (although I did not realize it until the last quarter of the book). The author skillfully makes me feel I was part of the plantation life, part of Art’s longing for justice, and reminds the reader how the superior-minded ruling white class took the self-respect from the slaves. Art’s last wife bore him a son, Leon, when Art was 69 years old. Leon’s story takes up a good portion of the middle of the book. One of his sons is a victim of slave trading; the trader is a shockingly close family member which sets up another string in this complicated yet engrossing story. The second part of the book returns the reader to Lugdale Estate in 1991. We are introduced to Yseult, 81 years old, her daughter Rachel, and crotchety Aunt Lydia who was Blair’s wife. I was a bit confused by this second group of people because I did not figure out their relationship to the O’Neill family, although we learn through flashbacks that Yseult became friends with Mary, who would eventually marry Leon O’Neill. The author included a subplot about the unearthing of a skeleton beneath an old tree. The investigators also found an old gold coin. Payment for work done long ago? Payment for a killing? And who was the skeleton? All these questions help the pieces and people of past and present come together. I was not sure how Yseult fit into the story at first. She is unhappy in the 300-year-old house and with her very modern daughter whose plans include turning it into a boutique hotel. This part of the novel at times confused me; there were unannounced flashbacks so that I wasn’t sure who was where, when. However it is the only objection to the compelling saga and I will forgive. As Yseult cleans out closets, she burns papers and evidence of her childhood time in Jamaica; the reader learns information that, when it all came together for me, made me say “What?! Oh how did I not see that?” I love the end of the book for helping me piece things and people together, and I loved the beginning of the book with the establishment of key characters and their passions. This is a book I will read again, and probably again.

Well researched, gripping epic family dramaI really, really enjoyed this detailed, well-researched sweeping family drama that carries us through a little known facet of Irish history.In her second novel, Olive Collins deals with the often hidden reality of the Irish in the Caribbean during the slave era. While we may know that Irish peasants were often transported to British overseas dominions as punishment for minor crimes, or given assisted passage out from Ireland in order to free up the landlord's estates from his impoverished tenants, Olive Collins does not shrink from the less often discussed topic of how the Irish, when given half a chance could be cruel and racist and abusive to those worse off than them in the strict hierarchy of the times.In this case the protagonist of The Tide between Us is transported to Jamaica and after 14 years of indentured servitude has the opportunity to gain his freedom, and the story proceeds to get really interesting from there.The plot is detailed and has twists and turns galore. And the writing is spare and elegant. a really satisfying read.I really enjoyed Olive Collins's first novel The Memory of Music, which is also a sweeping epic family story covering a hundred years, and this, her second, is even better. I look forward to reading more of her work in the future.

This is an enhanced reprint of the original, with additional study questions/ discussion and review added at the end of every chapter. I bought the original about 18 years ago and it changed my families destiny for the better. I am glad the reprint came out as it prompted me to reread it and deepen my understanding.Some people complain that this book does not give a step by step process for change. I would counter that one size shoe does not fit all feet. There are many individual paths to wealth, and Kiyosaki sets the guiding stars to navigate by, but you have to walk your own individual road.Some key concepts of this book are: 1) Assets put money in your pocket even when you are on vacation. Liabilities take money out of your pocket, therefore your house is a liability [unless you rent out rooms and the garage as one person I know did while rebuilding his asset base].2) Wealthy people buy assets first, and then let their assets buy their luxuries from the surplus cash flow.3) Wealthy people continuously increase their assets by reinvesting their surplus cash flow in more assets.4) There are 3 primary asset classes: Real Estate, Businesses, and Paper assets (stocks bonds notes, etc)5) Cash Flow is more important than Net Worth. Net Worth is similar to potential energy, to use it you have to spend it, then it is gone. Cash Flow is like power from a hydroelectric dam, constantly replenished.The rich don't work for money, they work for assets.The tax laws are fair from the standpoint that the laws that the rich spent billions of dollars to have modified and interpreted apply to everyone who learns how to use them.A great foundation book for beginning to improve your financial intelligence so that you don't work 4 or more month's of every year for the Tax man, more months for the banks that hold your mortgage and credit cards, and whatever is left making the company you work for wealthy. Good luck on your journey to being Rich, poor, or middle class.

I read this book about 11 years ago at 27 years old , had no money, I followed the advice in this book and now have 15 rental properties paid off free and clear, my assets more than cover all my expenses. I just bought this book again, I'm in the middle of reading it again now 11 years later and can't put it down. I hate reading btw. I plan on reading this book at least three more times over the next 20 years so I can keep all info fresh in my mind. People always ask me about success. I tell them to read this book...whats crazy is that they don't read it. You can lead a horse to water but can't make it drink. The book changed my life and it will change yours. Do you want change or do you just want to talk and think about change? There is a big difference , do it.

A very motivational book without a lot of practical steps to magically achieve the goals listed. Some inaccurate information such as Charles Schwab dying penniless. More important is the author filed for bankruptcy in 2012. Why is that? Research it on your own. For most people this will motivate them to THINK differently and think outside the box, but not necessarily ACT differently, as we still need money to live on and have to work some and not just dream big without action and income behind it. This books contrasts another book "The Millionaire Next Door." Some of the examples that seem to be his idols are a bit scary too, like Ray Kroc. I'd rather apply Biblical money principles from people like Dave Ramsey. All in all a fun good read for mental stimulation. Take it with a grain of salt and don't blindly follow it 100%

My husband and I were both like the poor Dad. My husband eared a degree in Physics from UCLA, and I earned a degree in Computer Science from Cal State LA. We have struggled for many years because we were NOT taught success techniques and we have been searching for them all these years. We found what we were looking for in this book.I'm glad we read this as a family.We are planning to read other great books, too. It is time to prosper!One of the secrets to success is to read ONE book a month. Half of them should be self help books like this one.

I owned this book in the past and wanted to reorder it to read it again. Instead of getting the book I expected, I received a tiny, hand sized book, with print that is too small and that is, frankly, hard to open all the way in order to read the words near the binder. So the book is utterly useless. With all the complaints about this tiny book, I'm not sure why that is the book that automatically comes up when you search for the book. Instead, the normal sized book should be the default, and then people can select the pocket sized book if they want. So I would say that the content of the book is excellent. DO purchase the book; however, BE SURE TO SELECT THE LARGER, PAPERBACK VERSION if that's what you want (sorry for the all caps, just want to make sure people see that part).

Some people love this guy, other's not so much. I am in the later camp, and find that this book offers so little concrete information it begs you to buy his other books, which I assume is the point. To each his own, but if you're looking for steps/concrete ideas, this isn't for you.

I had read some of this book when I was in my early 20's. I thought that it was good but I couldn't grasp the depth of what was being shown in its content. At 40 now it changed my whole perception of possibility! This is an excellent book that I would recommend to anyone. It is so easy to spend your whole life not doing what you are passionate about simply because you don't know how to escape the hum drum of everyday life, going to a job; paying bills, repeat. This book conveys a mindset that when you get it, it will revolutionize how you see everyday opportunities and what you can do to change your financial future.

James Green is the author of five books, including Death in the Haymarket: A Story of Chicago, the First Labor Movement and the Bombing that Divided Gilded Age America. Green received his PhD in history from Yale University and is a Professor of History at the University of Massachusetts Boston. He lives in Somerville, Massachusetts.

Recently the PBS series "American Experience" featured a documentary based largely on the content of this fine book. As a native West Virginian, I am always interested in the history of my home state, but this part of its history was something of which I had only been vaguely aware, until now. Few people know that America's largest armed insurrection, aside from the Civil War, took place in the southern West Virginia coal fields, in 1921, culminating in the "Battle of Blair Mountain," which pitted nearly 10,000 armed miners against local authorities armed with World War I era machine guns and even bombers (the one and only aerial bombardment of Americans on American soil). It's the story of the rise of the UMWA, Mother Jones, the Matewan massacre, and a gigantic cast of real characters that spanned 40 years. James Green tells the tale in great detail, with an easily readable narrative flow, and plenty of documentation for those who wish to dig deeper into the story. Whether you are interested in West Virginia specifically or labor history, in general, this book is a fine introduction to a little-known aspect of our country's heritage.

Though born in Maine my father was from West Virginia. Some of my grandmother's family worked in the mines and one died in the Nellis mine disaster. My dad worked in a chemical plant and lost his job when the union did not support them. In West Virginia I learned a new meaning for scab. This book helped me understand what I experienced in West Virginia and gave me a new understanding and appreciation for those who gave so much for freedom. Thanks to the author for giving me a glimpse into my family's past.

A very good history of a much overlooked period in U.S. history.I found it interesting that Mr. Green did not attempt to deify Mother Jones or UMWA's John L. Lewis. Without denying the parts that they played, he gives credit to the players who deserve it.It is also worthwhile to remember that the "rank and file" miners did what it was necessary to do. That is to say that when their rights as citizens and workers were abrogated by government, mine owners, etc. they took matters into their own hands. A lesson for today...

My Grandfather, Great Grandfather, and most of their brothers all worked the mines in eastern Ohio back in the 20's thru the 60's. My Dad told me stories about the mine owners saying like the said in the book "Make sure that mule don't get killed, a man I can replace but mules cost money". He talked about the company store and how the mine owned all the houses where the men and their families lived. Also he said that my Great Grandfather had 3 pictures hanging on his wall Jesus, FDR, and John L Lewis. I had heard about the Coal Wars from a friend who lived in Mingo County WV ( I had never heard about it in school or even my family). This book really takes you there back in the hollows and hills with these miners and their families. It's really an eye opening read about how terribly these men and their families were treated before the unions came to the WV Coal Fields. I highly recommend it.

I've lived in WV for the last ten years but had little awareness of the depth of danger and exploitation involved in earlier days of WV mining. I should have found out sooner,both to appreciate my adopted state's history and to further temper my belief in the merits of capitalism with the witness of the heartlessness that human selfishness and greed can spawn.The story is well drawn, probably a task made more difficult by sparse and scattered original sources.Definitely a worthwhile read for anyone with even the remotest interest in labor history or the earlier days of our glorious state.

James Green does a wonderful job highlighting the struggle of the coal miners with the mine owners and the government. This book is a wonderful resource to understand how and why the coal miners were willing to risk everything to have union representation to be able to fight for a living wage, freedom from having to shop only at company stores, freedom to have an independent inspector weigh the coal they mined as the mine operators were in the business of not paying due to improperly weighing, the ability to BE themselves without having hired armed thugs police the mines and mine towns, and how the government and mine operators shot down these people and their request for a union to have fair pay.

I really learned a lot from this book. Great stories about the people and events associated with Appalachian miners and their unionizing attempts. More people should familiarize themselves with the struggles of the unions to achieve the benefits we take for granted today.

As a native West Virginian with family history in the mines this was a look at a bleak period in the state's history. While I am one who believes unions have outlived their usefulness (the welfare state takes their place, this was definitely a time when the union saved people's lives. The book shows what we can do with unfettered greed and evil. Unfortunately, still plenty to go around.
